"Seriously, Devon?" Harry shouted for what seemed like the fiftieth time. "I thought I told you to stay off the buoy!"

I laughed and Harry slumped into the chair next to me, pulling his hat over his eyes like he was ready to fall asleep.

"Lesson number one- never take your eyes off the water. Unless it's for a hot girl, er, guy in your case."

"Got it," I smiled as I leaned back.

"You are into boys, right?"

"Yes?"

"Wait, is that a question?"

"No! I'm not gay," I said quickly. "I mean, I like guys."

"What kind of guys?"

"What do you mean?"

He flipped his hat around and looked at me, his green eyes popping because of the slight sunburn forming on his cheeks. I could only guess that my blue eyes looked the same because of that exact reason.

"Describe your type."

"Alright," I shrugged, giving him an unsure look. "Tall, definitely. He has to be taller than me."

"Understandable."

"And smart."

"Okay."

"Preferably good with dogs but it's not a requirement."

"I hate dogs," he scoffed, kicking some sand on my feet. "Too slobbery."

"Maybe you're too slobbery."

He glared at me and I laughed, my head tilting back and my eyes closing as I clutched my sides. I think the sun was really getting to me.

"It's nine fifty," he said flatly, his voice sounding almost disappointed. "I can walk you to the stand, if you want."

I smiled. "Sure."

We walked in relative silence, except for his expert observation that I was beginning to burn.

"Where are you from, anyway?" He chuckled, handing me a bottle of sunscreen as we trudged across the burning sand. "You're burning like you've never been outside."

"I was born in Arizona so I used to get darker than you," I sighed. "But then we moved to Washington and, well..."

"It rains all the fucking time?"

"Basically."

"So you're pretty cool, right?" He asked randomly as the stand came into view. "I mean, you're a cool girl."

"Oh, thank you?"

"You wanna come to a bonfire tonight?"

"What?"

"The lifeguard bonfire is a tradition around here. We have one at the beginning of every summer and you're a lifeguard now."

"Am I going to get hazed?"

He laughed, his arm slinging around my shoulders. "You're funny, I like you."

"Thanks."

Niall jumped down from the stand and landed in front of us, his blonde hair still dripping from who knows what. "You brought my girl back!"

"I did," Harry grinned, ruffling his hair. "She's funny."

"Did you invite her to the thing tonight?"

"Yeah."

"Good."

"She's funny," he repeated, giving me one last grin before he turned his back to us. "I like her."
