The funny thing about liars is that the good ones think you believe them and the bad ones know you don't.
The problem is when people don't realise they are lying. Hoseok either completely believed he was betraying his best friend in helping me or he was a better liar than I had pegged him for. I was more inclined to believe the first. Which just made me even more fervent to solve this all before Hoseok got an aneurysm. His natural state was to smile. I didn't want him to lose that because I was testing the waters of Namjoon's game.
Everyone was very smiley around the campfire.
Jin had been right though.
Once the sun set, all the leaves began to glow and man of the animals as well. Colourful birds with glowing feathers swooped down low to snatch at small rodents who thought themselves hidden. I felt like those mice. I thought I was well hidden but I was in plain sight.I was falling into Namjoon's plan.
I didn't know if that was a bad thing or not. If he communicated with me, I may learn that I want to play along and help him in whatever endeavor he is planning, but instead he is using war tactics with me. As if I am to be conquered. It was starting to be inevitable that he would win, but I still had some hope. Someone from Versain who was not under Namjoon's thumb.
"Sage?" I looked over to see Jin smiling brightly. He handed me a stick with a purple marshmallow on the end. "I'll explain to you how it works."
"I know how it works." I laughed and took the stick from him. "I've seen a movie or two."
"Oh, then go right on." He laughed and gestured to the fire. I held it close to the fire and it burst into flames and turned to ash. I bit my lip and frowned. A wave of laughter burbled from the group and I found myself joining them. Jin held out another purple marshmallow and put it on the end of my stick.
"Hold it here." Jin put his own stick about a foot away from the fire. I moved closer to him and put my stick as close to his as I could. They turned golden brown within a minute. The rest of the process was similar to smores. It tasted similar but slightly richer and fluffier. Instead of a graham cracker it was a thin wafer so the whole thing seemed to melt in your mouth.
"So good!" I sighed and Jin laughed.
"I'm glad." He smiled and I returned it. It almost felt genuine. I looked over to see Hoseok had fallen asleep on Jimin who was blinking slowly and staring into the fire. The fire was something else altogether.
There were beaches in Washington where your fire would burn green because of the salt or something like that, but this burned a myriad of different colors: orange, red, green, purple, pink, blue. It matched the abstract feeling to the planet.
"I'm going to sleep." Jungkook stood up and slumped off to his cot. The cot zipped up on the top but has a thin mesh layer over the top half so you could still breathe and see the stars.
"Come on, Hobi." That was a new nickname I had learned everyone called Hoseok. I had yet to try it out but was nervous to. It felt like something too intimate for me to touch. Jimin helped Hoseok up and ended up half dragging him to his cot. Taehyung moved next to Namjoon and they started to murmur in quite harsh tones. I looked at Jin and he was intently staring at the two of them.
"Are you alright?" I asked in a soft voice. Jin smiled down at me.
"Of course." He looked back over at them. "Aren't you curious what they're whispering about?"
"Not particularly." I shrugged. Jin smiled at me as if he thought he could see through my wall. I put my hands up.
"I'm serious!" I laughed. "You were right the other day. There are a lot of things suspicious about my being here, but I just don't care."
