Dinner with Inko was always awkward for Izuku. But this, this was going to be HELL.
Inko had been ecstatic when he told her that All Might would be coming over as well. It had been a few years since they had last seen each other, and she couldn't wait to catch up.
Izuku was just glad that Katsuki would be there. Maybe they could sneak off and escape.
Aizawa admired Inko. She was a genuinely sweet woman who clearly cared deeply for her son. But he would be lying if he said he wasn't dreading this dinner a little. At least he would be able to make Izuku uncomfortable.
Silver linings.
He climbed the steps up to Midoriya's apartment. He hated elevators. He was a few feet from their door when he heard loud popping. Explosions. His heart raced as rapped his knuckles on the door. Inko opened it with a wild smile that only wavered when she saw Aizawas panicked expression.
"Are you alright, Aizawa?"
The weight left his shoulders as he realized there was no danger in the Midoriya household, "I thought I heard explosions. Sorry." He was a bit embarrassed, but the small woman in front of him didn't seem to mind.
"Oh no, don't worry! That's just Katsuki!" She giggled softly and waved him inside, "he's trying to teach Izuku how to play shogi."
Aizawa liked the Midoriya's apartment. It was homely and cozy.
The two teenagers were sitting on the living room floor, Izuku looked completely uninterested in the boardgame in front of him, and Bakugo was scowling as he tried to explain the rules.
Izuku looked up as Aizawa entered, "Hey, old man."
"Problem Child." Aizawa looked around and noticed that someone was still missing. "The oaf late again?"
Inko laughed and answered for him, "he said he was running a bit late, but he will be here soon!" She shut the door and ushered him into the room with the kids. "Here, take a seat! The food should be ready by the time Tosinori shows up!"
Inko left him in the room with the teenagers, and it couldn't have been more awkward.
He cleared his throat, "so, what are you two doing?"
Izuku stood up and moved to sit on the sofa across from Aizawa, "Kacchan is trying to make me play board games."
Katsuki cut in, also moving to take a seat on the sofa. "And Izuku is trying to pretend he doesn't understand the game, so he won't have to play!"
God, those two would be a nightmare in the same classroom.
Aizawa watched the boys bicker and laugh before they were cut off by a loud knock on the door. Inko ran to open it and invited All Might in, his bulky body was a tight squeeze through the door, but once he was in, he flashed his ridiculous smile at the boys and gave Inko a light hug.
Aizawa honestly expected more of a reaction from the boys. He expected Bakugo to at least get excited. All Might is the number 1 hero. What teenager doesn't worship him? But other than a small wave from Bakugo and a quick "sup" from Midoriya, there was no reaction. Weird.
Once All Might was in, Inko led everyone into the kitchen to eat. She had made Katsudon, and god, that lady could cook. Everyone grabbed a seat (Aizawa thought All Might would need two), and Inko placed a bowl of food in front of all her guests.
They all thanked her for the meal and dug in. It was delicious. Aizawa was glad he didn't turn the invitation down.
Aizawa felt painfully out of place as Inko and All Might talked cheerily. They even manage to get a few words out of Izuku, who was trying to turn invisible. And of course, All Might had made it his personal mission to get as much conversation out of Izuku as possible
"So, young Midoriya! You have never properly introduced me to your friend, young Bakugo!"
Even Aizawa could see the boy squirm. All Might was just an oblivious idiot.
"Ah, I've told you about Katsuki before." He didn't even look up from his bowl. Aizawa had never seen the kid this uncomfortable before. He was used to the mouthy, annoying Vigilante that never shut up.
"Yes! But you have never properly introduced us! How do you two know each other!" God, All Might was really pushing his luck. The poor kid was red as a tomato and looked like he wanted the ground to swallow him up.
The air around them went cold as Inko snapped her eyes to her son, "Izuku don't you dare-"
Inko was cut off by both Izuku and Bakugo disappearing in front of them. Just, gone.
Aizawa stood up and looked around, "what the fuck?"
Inko sighed, clearly frustrated. "One meal. That's all I asked him for. One meal where he wouldn't run off and hide." She had her head in her hands and looked drained.
"How did he do that, Inko?" Aizawa glanced around again, making sure that they really were gone, "is that his quirk?"
Inko looked up at him, surprised, "you don't know about his quirk?! You've been working with him for weeks and chasing him for months!"
"He said he didn't want to talk about it and that he preferred to fight quirkless anyways."
All Might cut in, "Even I don't know what his quirk is, Inko."
She looked down again, and Aizawa swore he saw tears in her tired eyes.
"I- I can't. That's not my story to tell. I'm sorry."
All Might looked upset, "did I do something wrong? I didn't mean to make him run off like that. I'm sorry, Inko."
Inko sighed, "no, he just doesn't like telling people about him and Katsuki." she rubbed her eyes, getting rid of any evidence of tears, "he still thinks people will reject him if they find out."
All Might just looked confused, so Aizawa asked, "they are together, aren't they?" The look of shock on All Might's face pissed him off, "I saw them together in the hospital. It was kind of obvious."
"Yeah, they've been best friends since they were babies. Honestly, I don't know when they started dating. It just sort of happened, and I never questioned it." she looked sad again, as if the weight of the world was coming down on her, "but I know other people questioned it. I don't know if it was other kids or adults. But I remember his face when he would come home from school."
She looked pointedly at All Might, "and I never want to see that look on my son's face again."
She glanced at Aizawa with pleading eyes. "I know I have no right to ask. Especially after all you have been doing for him. But I think I know where he might be if you wouldn't mind looking?"
