after our quite fun practice, we were taken into the lobby where we were shown that we were all on a wheaties box. everyone gasped in excitement and joy.
"today, it's a wheaties box. tomorrow it's video games, action figures, lunch boxes, the sky's the limit. and now, just to make sure everyone knows who you are, try on one of these."
don had held up red, white, and blue usa jerseys. "that's so cool!" connie exclaimed i nodded my head in agreement. i peaked behind my shoulder to see charlie with a confused and upset look.
everyone stood up and made their way to grab their own. i held mine in front of me and smiled. i was quite happy for where i was at the moment.
we all had to wake up early the next morning, as it was one of our first days of school. we were being taken to this beautiful lake with forest surrounding us.
i took a seat on one of the wooden logs as dean sat himself on the grass in front of me. i took a deep of the fresh air around me and listened to ms. mckay.
"ancient greece was the beginning of western civilization. see, in greece, they didn't have professional sports or wheaties boxes. so the athletes competed for another reason. anybody?"
goldberg spoke aloud. "falafels?" all of us chuckled at his answer. charlie raised his hand and answered as he was called on from ms. mckay.
"pride." he answered. 'that's right. various city-states waved their flags and wore their home colors proudly."
history wasn't my favorite subject and nor was it my best. but the way ms. mckay put things made it all seem so much more interesting.
"did america always dominate?" fulton questioned. everyone laughed at the brown-haired boy, but dean was one to stick up for him. "that's a good question."
"no, america wasn't around back then. don't forget that compared to other countries. america is still young, still forming its own identify. america is a teenager, just like you."
i smiled at ms. mckay's words. "like us?" jesse questioned. "you bet," she responded back to him. "a little awkward at times but always right there on the verge of greatness."
after finishing up our lesson of history and going through a brand new unit of math, we all decided to put our rollerblades on and skate around. we followed coach bombay on his golf cart.
"i don't know what i've been told!"
"i don't know what i've been told."
"team usa's gonna win the gold!"
"usa's gonna win the gold."
"listen up and listen good!"
"listen up and listen good."
"we're all headed for hollywood!"
"we're all headed for hollywood."
after getting back to our dorms, i plopped myself on my bed and picked up the phone. i decided i was going to call tracey and see how she was doing.
the phone rang a few times before she picked up. "tracey mcadams?" i chuckled at her words. "why hello tracey. how have you been girly?" i asked as i laid on my back and stared up at the ceiling.
"honestly, kind of good and bad. good because i have vance and things are going swell with him. bad because i miss you, a lot." i smiled at her words.
"oh tracey, i'll be back in no time." for at least another half hour, we talked about anything and everything. she caught me up on ay drama occurring at school and i told her everything that happened ever since i left home.
"main question, any cute guys?" she asked cheekily. a small blush arose onto my face as one boy popped into my mind. "oh i don't know, maybe."
"oh my gosh. you've got to tell me all the details about him!" she screeched into the phone. i laughed at how she was reacting.
i went on explaining dean and how we instantly had a strong connection. from when we had a nice dinner together and told each other funny stories all night, to when we were dancing together a practice.
"i can't believe it," tracey began. a fake sniffle came from the other end of the line. "you have found true love. when is the wedding? i better be one of your bridesmaids."
"alright and this is my cue to leave. i love you and miss you so much! tell vance i said hello. bye!" before she was even able to say anything else, i ended the call.
i made my way to the bathroom and decided to take a nice shower. after i freshened myself up and put on my pajamas, i made my way down to the lobby and went over to the little snack bar.
i grabbed a granola bar and water for myself and right as i reached my dorm room, i saw dean. our eyes connected for a second and i swear, it was a feeling i never felt before.
