I fixated my pencil skirt after I got up and looked down at myself to see if any of my clothes were placed weirdly, seeing none, I headed to my boss's office with a nervous sigh.
It's been a week after the little incident with the man in Starbucks. Each day, I was always there but unfortunately, the same stranger wasn't. I thought maybe it was because I went out earlier and on that day I was actually late as heck.
"Come in," sounded my boss from her office after I knocked three times against her door. With one last breath, I gently pushed the door open and headed inside.
"Please take a seat, miss Grace," my boss, Mrs. William, stated and I pulled the right chair in front of her desk and sat down.
I eyed her with cautious eyes since I didn't know what it was about. I just hope it wasn't what I think it was cause I really love this job.
"Is something the matter, Mrs. William?" I questioned and bit onto my lower lip nervously. She told me to wait a second and signed her last file on her desk before giving me her attention.
"There have been some complaints about you lately, miss Grace. Not to forget the incident with you coming tardy last week as well," my heart thumbed against my rib cage hard as I swallowed.
"I-It was just one time! I promise to do better, Mrs. William!" I exclaimed with my best pleading voice. Her reaction was not what I expected though because she shook her head and looked down.
"It's very unfortunate, miss Grace, but I'm afraid you're fired. Effective immediately," I tried to protest, "but-" and got cut off by her no second later, "end of discussion!"
I stood up from my seat and took in a deep breath, tears clouding my vision a bit but I refused to let them fall.
"Yes, Mrs. William. I understand," I bowed out of respect and walked out of her office to pack my things.
Meanwhile in the office, unbeknownst to me, was Mrs. William currently on her phone with another person.
"Yes, I did as you requested," she said with a little distaste in her tone. It was never Mrs. William's intention to ever fire Camille.
Unfortunately, a person that could take her company away from her threatened her and she didn't have any other choice but to oblige.
"I must let you know though, mr Queen, miss Grace was and will always be the best in my company. I find, you will be very pleased with her performance as your assistant," the middle aged woman exclaimed with pride in her voice yet still held anger behind it.
"I have no doubt in it, Mrs. William. Now it was nice doing business with you, but my next meeting starts I five. Have a great day, Mrs. William," the businessman on the other end of the phone wished and then hang up without a reply from her.
Coming back to me, I wiped a few tears away from my cheeks that fell while I packed away a few of my personal items.
When I finished, I closed the lid on top and sighed heavily. I stared at Mrs. William's door for a second and debated whether I should bid goodbye to her or not, but then shook my head and thought better of it.
As I tried to walk away though, there was this nagging feeling inside me that told me I should at least let her know I'm departing now.
So making up my mind now, I left my box on the floor and turned around. It was fortunate for me that Mrs. William walked out by herself right now and I halted mid-ways.
"Ehm...Mrs. William, I will be on my way now. I left the desk as it is and sorted the rest of the files by the alphabet. Your schedule for the rest of the week lays beside them and you have a dinner scheduled with Mr. Gonzales this evening at six pm for the new sponsoring event," I announced quickly with a shaky breath.
Mrs. William looked sad for some reason but masked it immediately and nodded her head at me, "thank you, you may go now."
I nodded my head and turned around, picked up my box and headed towards the elevator. When it arrived, I was about to get inside but got stopped by Mrs. William calling me.
My left foot was already in the elevator and I only leaned my body back to see her, "it was a pleasure working with you, miss Grace," I smiled at the statement and bowed my head a bit as if to say 'it was a pleasure myself'.
