Lawrence’s House.
Lawrence was sitting on his bed. He pulled out something on his pocket. It was a necklace chain with heart shape pendant. In the pendant, there were letters engraved. There you could read: “M. Melendrez”. Lawrence gently rubbed the pendant with his thumb. He lied down on his bed while embracing the necklace on his chest. Then flashback began to play from his precious memory. It was played on the time he acquired the pendant.
FLASHBACK
An eight year old Lawrence was closing the Church’s front door when he saw a girl crying outside the church. She was sitting at the church stairs. The rain started to drop. After a series of few raindrops, He saw how the girl would not leave to shelf herself from the rain, she just stationary furiously crying. The child Lawrence quickly got an umbrella and ran to shield the girl from the rain.
“Okay ka lang?” Lawrence said to the girl, trying his best to calm her.
When the girl heard the boy’s voice, she cried louder.
“Hey! Bakit? Tahan ka na.” the boy in his panicked voice.
The little girl crying slowed down looked at the little Lawrence.
“Miss may umaway ba sayo? Halika pasok ka? Lalo ka mababasa ng ulan.” Lawrence said.
Lawrence got his handkerchief on his pocket and gave it to the little girl. “Sandali, eto panyo” he was about to wipe her, when the girl took the handkerchief and wiped herself. He sudden felt heat on his face when her hand touched his skin. He was obviously blushing.
“Thank you” the little girl said, she was bit calm this time, but still teary.
The girl followed the boy’s lead. They sat down the pew near the church’s front door. When the girl saw the cross in the altar she cried louder.
“Hey hey! What’s wrong? Why are you still crying?” Lawrence said, now being panicked again form the girl’s hysteria.
“My.. My d-dad w-w-won’t come back any-m-more.” She was choking and stuttering because of too much crying.
“Why where did he go?” Lawrence asked.
“My m-mom s-said that.. That his soul w-w-went to he-heaven” said the girl and cried again.
“My uncle father told me that when a person goes to heaven, it means they will be like angels. They will forever be happy with God.” He said cheering the girl. It was effective on the other part.
She was catching her breath and coughing hard and said “Can’t me and my mom go there to be with dad?”
“Yes. You and your mom will go there someday. All of us.” Lawrence said on cheering tone. He squeezed her hand. The girl looked at the boy.
Lawrence felt his heart was squeezed with the girl’s pain. He then said.
“Don’t worry, just think your dad is with you like a guardian angel”
“Really? Why I can’t see him?” the girl asked him. Her face was confused but with little hope that she could still see her dad.
“I don’t know but my uncle father told that you can feel them with your heart. Maybe we are still child to understand that.”
“Really?” the girls cry stopped. The girl smiled, Lawrence was stunned with the smile of the girl.
“Oo. Tahan na. papangit ka pag umiyak ka ng masyado”. He shrugged her shoulder.
He could see the girl’s face serene though still teary. When...
“Baby? Mayvonne!!” cried by a lady who has worried face. She came in with Father Manzano. She looked like the little girl’s face and he concluded the she was the little girl’s mother.
She looked at her back. “Mommy!” uttered the girl as she went to the lady crying and hugged her.
“I was so worried baby. I can’t afford to lose you now, baby. Don’t ever go far huh?.” She was wiping her child’s sweat. The girl was still crying to her mom.
“Thanks father Manzano.” She looked at Father Manzano.
“You welcome Mrs. Melendrez.”.the old priest smile.
“Thank you little boy for taking care of my baby.” The lady embraced Lawrence. Lawrence could smell the sweet fragrance of her perfume.
“My pleasure Madam.” Lawrence said shyly. He saw the little girl
The lady smiled. He could see from the lady’s eyes how painful she is.
He saw the girl went inside the van with her mom. The girl gave her “byebye wave” through the van’s windshield. He and Father Manzano were at the Church entrance stairs then, they saw the van going away.
When there were walking back the church convent, He suddenly looked down the stairs noticed the heart shaped pendant, he picked it up and noticed the engraved letter “M. Melendrez”.
Lawrence smiles while remembering the past. He put the necklace inside the box, then turned off his lampshade.
“Fate has brought us back My Juliet. Good night My Juliet”. Lawrence whispered as he closed his eyes and sleep.
