9. Spillage
Luke hadn't been the same since that night in the forest. He was sad. Very sad. I could understand, since he lost a friend and all, but he had me. He just didn't see that.
"Aren't you going to eat anything?" I turned towards Luke who's thumb was rapidly scrolling through a news feed on his phone.
He shook his head and focused on the screen. None of the boys have been acting like themselves lately. Especially Ashton, who I haven't seen talk to anyone in days. Michael seemed OK. He still talked to everyone about Pokemon and girls and all that stuff, he just wasn't as open. Calum was alright too, he doesn't seem as affected as the other boys, but he doesn't cope well with it either.
I swirled the lunchroom pasta around my trey, trying to make the silence from the boys as least awkward as possible.
My eyes gazed over to Ashton. He was sitting across the table from me, his head was in his hands like they've been for the past 10 minutes. He hasn't said a word to anyone in at least 4 days.
He was wearing a cut up shirt of a band I didnt recognize. His collarbone peeked out of the rips, causing me to examine the rest of him.
Time has done Ashton good, he grew much taller, his body was more sculpted now. He looked more mature, but also stressed. His hair has changed to a darker color and also grew curly. He had good style too, a style I wouldn't expect him to like. It looked good on him, the skinny jeans, the leather jackets, the bandanas. They were definitely something I did not expect from him.
"Macy? Hellooo?" A hand rapidly waved in front of my face. I snapped out of my gaze and turned to the one I knew as Jules.
The first thing I noticed was a nose stud. A tiny little diamond in the crook of her nose.
"Wow, quite a commitment there Jules." I picked up my plastic fork and began picking at the pasta again.
"You like?" She tapped the tiny diamond and flashed a smirk in Ashton's direction.
I looked at Ashton to see his head now out of his hands. His eyes were red, but he wasn't crying. His facial expression towards Jules was priceless. He almost looked disgusted, like someone had just spit in his food.
Jules awkwardly focused her attention back on me, "So what's going on?" She looked at my food and swished her legs up to the bench crossing them.
"Nothing. Literally nothing. They're all just so bummed." I looked at Luke on my opposite side. He was laying his head on his arms with his eyes closed. A shallow breathing came from him and I figured he was sleeping. He looked so peaceful and tired. He deserved the sleep.
"Why is that?" Jules took a carrot from my trey and chewed on it loudly. I shook my head and furrowed my eyebrows, "No reason. It's not really my concern." I looked at Luke again, his hair fell in front of his face. I leaned over and carefully swished it to the side, tucking some of it back under his black beanie.
I couldn't help but smile when he shifted in his spot and scrunched his nose, "Thanks Mace." He groaned with a cheeky smile. He never opened his eyes to see who it was.
"I thought you were asleep." I tried to hide the redness in my cheeks, thinking the other guys would see me.
"I wish." He turned his head in the other direction and dozed back off. I suddenly realized how loud the lunchroom was. I would never be able to sleep in this.
The scraping of my trey across the table focused my attention back over to Jules. She was eating my pasta like nobody's business.
"Why don't you get your own lunch?" I chuckled as she shoved a fork full of pasta into her mouth.
"Because," she chewed, "I'm broke." chunks of pasta spewed out of her mouth.
"Same!" Mikey cut in, high-fiving my best friend.
I laughed and looked at Calum, who was whispering something that looked concerning to Ashton. He just sat there and nodded, looking ashamed and upset.
I couldn't help but wonder what they were talking about. Nothing made any sense to me, Luke told me to ask Ashton about the girl that passed away. I bet thats why he's upset, but the other boys knowing about it didn't make much sense.
"So," Jules excitedly turned her body towards me, shifting her crossed legs to face me, "Whats up with you and him?" She pointed to Luke, who was breathing shallowly.
"What do you mean?" I tried to act confused. She could read right through me. Around her, I was transparent.
She hit my arm lightly, "Oh come on Macy! I know that look. The one when you have a crush on someone. You get all red in the face when they talk to you, and try to act like nothing's going on but really theres something big that you're not saying." She took one huge breath before continuing, "So spill."
I laughed and glanced at Luke, who was still facing in the opposite direction. Sleeping I suppose. I tried to speak as quietly as possible, "I like him, a lot. We kind of had a moment the other night when-"
Jules cut me off and held an ear as she leaned in the hear me, "What? Something about having a thing with a blonde boy?" She spoke sarcastically and loudly as a smile spread across her face.
I clapped her mouth shut when all the boys looked in my direction with really confused stares. Ashton, Cal and Mikey all immediately stopped what they were doing and turned to me. Mikey wanted to hear more, Cal just looked at Luke and I repeatedly, and Ashton looked hurt. Really hurt. He didn't look at me when he got up and left the table, walking away with his hands in his hair and then furiously pushing the door open to go outside. It was almost cold enough to be snowing, but I don't really think he cared.
"Ashton!" I got up and ran after him as I heard murmurs around me, people were saying things like "You go girl." And "Go beat his ass." I flipped some of them off, others I just left alone.
I opened the door to the outside and immediately saw the back side of Ashton. He was siting on a bench under a tree holding his arms and rocking back and forth from the cold. Puffs of white breath lingered above him, I needed to explain everything to him. I needed to make sure he was ok, and find out what happened with him and that girl.
I walked over to him slowly, letting the cold attack my body. I stood behind him and lightly tapped his shoulder.
He turned around with chattering teeth and tears in his eyes. I was shocked, he looked completely ruined. I did this, I made him feel this way.
"Hey." I sighed.
