10. Snowflakes

This is chapter 10 already! Whoo!~
"Hey."
I let the cold glass door slip from my fingertips as Ashton came into view. He heard me, but gave me nothing but the cold shoulder.
It was wickedly cold outside. I could see puffs of Ashton's breath floating through the air. He sat on a bench connected to the concrete just outside the door, empty tables surrounded him.
I slowly walked over to him, gripping the sides of my arms for the sake of warmth.
"Ash?" I stood next to him, he looked up at me with no emotion whatsoever. His eyes were dark and his hair was messy. There were dark circles under his eyes, he looked tired.
Nothing could really explain how much it hurt me to see him go through everything that he has. He lost someone, and that clearly got to him. Now i'm making a mess of things by liking Luke.
When Ashton looked back down at the ground I took that as my cue to sit next to him. I slowly sat down on the concrete bench and tried to connect my eyes with him. I failed, he moved his head away slightly to avoid looking at me.
I didn't blame him. I was the one who was practically trying to avoid him for God knows what reason. I couldn't really explain why I was avoiding him in the first place. It's hard to just bring him back into my life when he's the one who left.
But it's not like he had a choice, right? He was a young 13 year old boy that had no choice but to go with his family. So, why was I holding back so much? It's not like he's a completely different person.
He sniffled and wiped his nose with his jacket sleeve. Clouds of white breath puffed from his lips and I couldn't help but notice how cold I was. I didn't care.
"What are you doing here Macy?" His voice broke through the silence. It was harsh and icy, but something about it didn't scare me. He needed comfort more than he needed to be feared.
"I want to help."
He paused for a few seconds until he rubbed his hands on his black skinny jeans and pushed himself up from the bench, avoiding all eye contact, "I don't need help." He started to walk towards the glass door when my instincts kicked in.
My hand grasped his bicep and turned him toward me. He seemed shocked for my reacting the way I did. I even shocked myself, because I didn't know what I did until after it happened.
I didnt take my grip off his arm until he looked me in the eyes, "I know you Ashton. You're not okay." I calmly tried to talk to him, taking baby steps.
He seemed calm at first, until everything that was bothering him seemed to come to the surface. He became angry and flustered, violently running his hands through his hair as he tried to figure out what to say.
"You don't know me." He spat out, pointing a finger inches from my face.
He spun around on his feet, heading towards the door again but this time with more rage. I grabbed his arm again and forced him to look straight into my eyes.
"Are you trying to tell me that this is you? What happened to that boy I knew before he decided it was okay to leave their best friend all alone?" I put a bit of attitude into my words. This was definitely not Ashton. If that's what he's trying to tell me then he's way wrong.
"Okay you know I didn't have a choice!" He walked away from me and over to a distant table, standing beside it.
He was right. I knew he didn't have a choice, but yet I decided to blame him. It wasn't anyones fault, but he could have texted or called.
