Unknown to the royal duo, they were being spied on by two evil mermen and a demonic sea serpent. All three had a connection to the royal family in some way; the merman with white hair, Sethiroth, was Cloud's ex-boyfriend, the merman with a hat, Ardyn, was Noctis's uncle and the sea serpent, Alastor (or Boo, sometimes) was Mario's uncle.
The three villains were plotting to overthrow Boo's goodie two fins brother, Bowser, and take the ocean for themselves.
"Yes," Alastor sighed, watching his youngest nephew, "Swim on home, Prince. We wouldn't want to miss old daddikins' celebration. Hmp. Celebration." He lamented, "When my little brother let me and Lyric live in the palace, we would watch mermen battle to the death!"
"Oh, don't worry, Alastor," Ardyn reassured his friend, "We'll get those times back somehow."
"And I have a feeling that this pretty little prince is the secret to your return to stardom." Sethiroth added, looking deep into the colourful-hole they were spying on Mario through.
Alastor thought for a second before saying, totally out of the blue, "Sethiroth, you're a genius!"
"He is?" Ardyn asked,
"I am?" Sethiroth asked at the same time,
"You are," Alastor answered, "It's so obvious! Parents would do anything for their younger children."
"Especially when he has the best singing voice out of all his siblings combined." Ardyn huffed.
"And he clearly abuses it, too." Alastor agreed, "A boy never appreciates what good things he has until they're gone. Maybe we can catch two fish with one worm and teach both my spoiled little brother and his dits of a son a lesson."
Alastor: 🎵I. Want. The little boy. 🎵I really want him bad. 🎵I want him waiting here for, 🎵His big twin brother and dad. 🎵I want my goodie goodie brother to come rescuing the sap. 🎵And then we'll have good times, 🎵My God those were good times, 🎵Oh yes, they were good times~ 🎵Let's get them back!

Back at the undersea palace, Mario and Noctis were met by three enraged faces: Bowser, Cloud and Luigi.
"What the hell, bro?" Luigi asked his twin, "What made you late THIS time?"
"Mario Titan Koopa! Thanks to your reckless actions," Bowser scolded,
"Reckless and selfish actions," Cloud corrected his king,
"You've made a fool out of your six siblings!" Bowser finished.
"With all due respect, King Koopa," Noctis spoke, "It wasn't his fault. We were on our way back from visiting the remains of my home kingdom, Atlantis, when we were attacked by sharks. They tried to rip your son to shreds and we were forced to go to a place not even sharks would dare to go: the surface."
"WHAT!?" Bowser bellowed, "Mario, tell me you did not swim to the surface!"
"Would you prefer us being eaten!?" Mario asked his father with a snarky tone in his voice,
"I'd like neither! Why didn't you blow the conch shell I got you? I'd have come!"
"I didn't think about it, okay? And what's your beef with the surface, anyway?"
"Do you know what Mobians do to our kind? They chop us to bits and eat us after we suffocate from lack of water! And do you think I want that to happen to my youngest son!?"
"You're babying me AGAIN!? Weegie and I are both eighteen years old!"
"I'm older by an hour, Mario!" Luigi exclaimed to his twin,
"Yeah, but that doesn't mean you have to act like you know better, Luigi!" Mario retorted to his twin,
"ENOUGH! BOTH OF YOU!" Bowser bellowed, making the whole castle shake, "Luigi, stay out of this! And Mario, if I catch word you going to the surface again, YOU'RE GROUNDED! Now get out of my sight!"
Mario, dreadfully wounded, swam out of the palace, Noct on his tail.
"Hmp. Little brothers. They think they know everything." Luigi huffed, crossing his arms,
"Oh, I know, Your Highness," Cloud agreed, "You give them an inch, and they swim all over you."
Bowser looked at a picture of him and his children, sighing to himself. At times, he thought he was too hard on his kids, because that's what they were, kids.
"Do you think I was too strict with him?" Bowser asked his guard captain,
"Not at all, Sire." Answered Cloud.
"I honestly don't blame you, Dad," said Luigi, "If you'd let me have my way, I'd have Mario under lock and key, I would never in my life let Mar go to the surface."
Bowser thought for a second, then asked his second-to-youngest son, "Do you really think you can?"
"Of course, Dad. Someone needs to keep Mar and Noct in line, and Cloud and I are it."
"Yeah," Cloud agreed then asked, surprised "Wait, what?"
