Three years had passed since the Pevensies were crowned king and queen of Narnia. Diana's seventeenth birthday was just around the corner and everyone in the palace seemed to be making a fuss out of it.

Even though she had insisted she wanted something small with just her friends, some lemon cake, and a night of chess, Lucy Pevensie had bigger, grander plans.

Without Diana's knowledge, the youngest Queen of Narnia had begun to plan an elaborate ball extravaganza. Susan and Peter had also jumped in on the fun, helping send out invitations, order catering services, and find Diana the finest dress maker in Narnia.

So when Diana woke up a few days before her birthday, surrounded by servants asking her questions about the ball, she was slightly pissed.

She hadn't wanted this. She hadn't wanted a big party full of people she didn't know. She wanted a calm night with her friends, her family. She wanted a quiet dinner. But it didn't really matter.

She couldn't get mad at her friends for just wanting her to have fun.

Could she?

Edmund had walked into her room shortly after she had woken up. He'd be turning eighteen in a few months and knew how stressful birthdays could be for those who weren't used to a lot of socializing.

He laughed at her bewildered state. She hadn't even had a chance to change from her night clothes before the castle's staff had bombarded her with questions. Did she want gold curtains or silver? Did she want red roses or pink lilies? Did she want china or glass? What color tablecloths? What type of music? What type of food and drink?

Too many questions in too many minutes and Diana wasn't even fully awake. Edmund kindly asked the staff to leave so that she could dress, telling them that she would answer their questions before lunch.

"You're welcome." He told her cheekily, flopping down onto the bed next to her. She groaned, throwing an arm over her eyes.

"I really wish Lucy hadn't decided that a party was the best idea."

"You'll have fun." Edmund promised the white haired girl. She gave him a look.

"Jadis never held balls when she was queen. Parties like this, I'm just not used to them." Diana told him. She had started calling her mother by her formal name after her death. She didn't think she deserved the title of being her mother anymore.

"I'll stick by your side the entire night."

"Will you now?" Diana joked, flipping onto her stomach and propping her head on her hands. "The most eligible bachelor of Narnia wishes to stay with me all night?"

"You know I'm not into those frilly girls Peter invites." Edmund told her, turning his head to study her face. She had a small smile on her lips, which made his insides all twisty.
