Jack’s POV:
I’d been sitting in my room alone when I’d heard people gossiping in the hallway.
“The alpha’s out fighting her off right now.”
“There are some human girls down in the front room. They won’t stop sobbing.” I listened and heard two girly whales from the room below mine.
“Well, the shifter went after them. That’s very nerve racking.”
“But do they have to be so loud? They woke my daughter up from her nap. Besides, they should kick them out soon. When will Luna Maya get them some of that forgetful tea? Just send them off on their merry way, that’s what they should do.”
“She’s working on it.”
I put my ear buds in to try and drown them out with god old heavy metal. It wasn’t until my current song ended and there was a break between the loud music when I heard the chatty Catties outside mentioning Maya.
“That new girl, what’s her name? Whatever. Well she tried to fight off the shifter twice her size while they brought the girls inside.” I turned off my iPod immediately and walked to the door to listen.
There was a gasp or two to add to the loud bustle of rumors. “But she’s so inexperienced! Who let her do that?”
“Stella, the alpha’s daughter. I tell you, that girl shouldn’t be considered a werewolf. She doesn’t shift, she doesn’t fight, and she doesn’t even eat meat. The witch in her is too much; it’s hard to believe that she’s descended from Sam. He used to be dreadfully vicious.”
I wanted to open the door and reveal one of Stella’s best friends and start throwing people around by their hair, but decided to listen for what else they might say about Maya. Was she hurt? What exactly happened anyway?
“Black sheep aren’t all bad,” someone defended. “Unless they’re shifters.” The two laughed and I heard footsteps walking away.
Well, might as well just go check on my own. I ran out of my room and to the stairs, skipping steps in my hurry. “I heard there were a shifter and some girls…” I shut up, taking in the sight of two human girls with dark hair sitting on the couch between Stella and Maya, who looked just as beautiful as ever. Seeing her alright calmed down my frenzy.
“Oh, hey.”
“Hey, Jack, can you come help them calm down. I’m going to go check on my mom. She’s getting them some tea,” Stella asked. Good; the tea. The tea she was referring to was a forgetful potion. The girls would forget up to an hour ago and for about five minutes wander around wherever we tell them to go. By the time they realize where they are, they’ll be home.
I flopped down, taking Stella’s seat next to the paler of the two girls, whose names I still hadn’t learned. “So, girls, what do you want to talk about?”
The girl next to Maya sounded a little freaked still. Of course, being chased by shifters must be kind of terrifying for humans. “I just want a distraction.”
I nodded. “What do you like? Any hobbies? Do you do any sports?”
The girl next to me shuddered at the mention of sports. “I hate sports,” she complained. Maya high fived her, and I was shocked. In all honesty, I really kind of liked Maya, but her not liking sports… it was sick and wrong. “But Emma plays soft ball for our school.”
I looked at the tanned girl next to Maya. So your name’s Emma? I reached around the girl next to me and high fived Emma, as if to show Maya that she’s not the only one who can high five people.
