We went down to the kitchen where we saw a dozen or two people looking through pantries, cupboards and refrigerators for food. I myself felt a lot better and stronger than the previous day.
Stella led me to a cupboard and got out a paper bowl for herself and then handed me one. “We like disposable dishes here,” she said, getting out plastic spoons and then leading me to the pantry to get cereal. “Except, of course, when the whole pack eats together like we did last night. Then we’re stuck with the nice plates and silverware and Mom’s always stuck with the dishes. Perks of being the Luna of our pack,” she said sarcastically.
As she went to the fridge to get milk to pour on or breakfast, I went to the table. At her words, I remembered how many people had been at dinner last night. Then I remembered that this was a big pack for a reason.
“Stella, I just remembered, I need to talk to you about…” I looked around the room and everyone, most of them minding their own business. I recognized few from the previous night, and could put no names to the faces. “Something.”
Just then, Luna Maya walked in, fully dressed for the day in white pants that were loose and beautiful and an crimson colored tope with a low back and a high neckline. The sleeves were three-quarters length and reminded me of a sweater. When she saw me, she smiled and walked towards the table I sat at. “Maya, so lovely to see you up and smiling today! I trust you’re feeling well?”
I nodded. “Yeah, I’m feeling way better.”
She smiled and nodded. “Good. Now, I had a conversation with Jack a moment ago. I’d like to speak with you when you’re done with your bowl.” From her tone, I knew why she needed to talk to me.
I nodded. “Right, I was going to talk to you about that anyway,” I assured her before putting another spoonful of food into my mouth.
She nodded and then poured herself a bowl of almond honeybunches of oats, my favorite cereal.
Stella sat next to me with her bowl of Cheerios and shot me a confused look. “What did you need to tell me,” she asked.
I shook my head. “I’ll tell you later.”
She sighed. “Fine.”
I ate the rest of my cereal and then drank the milk and then set down the bowl. “Alright, I’m done,” I said, standing up.
Luna Maya nodded and then took one more spoonful of her breakfast and then abandoned the small amount left and led me away.
We walked down a hallway and she opened a door to a large conference room with a long mahogany table surrounded by swivel chairs. “This is the circle pack’s meeting room. It is where we have pack meetings or the Alpha and beta conference with other packs.”
I nodded as she sat in a chair by the head of the table and then gestured for me to sit next to her. I did so and we turned the chairs to face each other.
“Maya, Jack told me what he told you last night about our pack. He said you might have questions.”
She looked worried, like she was bracing herself for me to attack her with harsh words. I nodded. “Yeah, I just have a few questions. I guess I just want you to explain the circle pack to me. I am assuming it’s misunderstood considering all the horror stories I heard when I was little.”
She nodded. “Alright. My name was Maya Carthwell. Do you know what that means?” I shook my head, wondering why she was telling me about herself. “I was of the original witch family. My mother’s mother was the Gem of the witches. When she passed, my mother took her place. I was meant to be the gem myself when my mother went to dwell among the goddesses again.”
