The rays of the English summer sun had crept up the country and reached my family's home in the North. I reached for another crisp and felt the flavour explode in my mouth as the crunching echoed around my cranium. I was lying on a picnic blanket in the back garden, flicking through the shiny pages of a magazine and absentmindedly snacking and listening to music to pass the time. I was completely relaxed at that moment, enjoying my break from academic work although I did miss Chris. There were only two days until I'd be reunited with him though. My brother Joe and I had gone out quite a lot together; I was enjoying spending time with him. We were really close.

The soothing sounds of U2 coursing through my eardrums were rudely interrupted by my brother calling my name. Chris had bought me a CD of theirs just before we finished for the summer and I was for once actually enjoying listening to some of the music he loved. He had a varied music taste to say the least.

"Lover boy's on the phone!" Joe teased.

I stood up and rolled my eyes at him. "Thanks." I said as I darted inside to the phone.

"Hello?" I spoke into the phone.

"Hi, love." Chris replied. I could feel him smiling through the phone. I instantly relaxed; phone conversations usually made me nervous but his voice totally put me at ease. "So how are you?"

"I'm good I guess, aside from missing you of course. I was just out relaxing in the sun actually; listening to the CD you got me."

"Ooh the U2 one? It's quite cloudy here today actually. Aw, darling. I miss you too. It's not long until I see you again."

"Yeah, that's the one! Two days! I can't wait."

"Me neither. I'm glad you like it! My family are leaving tomorrow. My mum's such a worrier, like we won't be able to look after ourselves! I keep telling her that we manage fine when we're away at University but she's having none of it. Mind you she may have a point; there aren't many Chinese takeaways in rural Devon."

I giggled. "Chris. We'll manage! I can cook a few things."

"Thank god! My culinary skills leave a lot to be desired."

"I just can't wait to see you again. I mean I'm doing stuff with my brother but it's just killing time to me. We're going to the cinema tonight."

"Try and enjoy it though, yeah? I know you're close. You don't see him often but you're stuck with me all the time."

"I know Chris. The grass is greener I guess."

"I understand what you mean. Feels like that for me too. My siblings all love me to pieces and I love them too but I just want to be with you. Anyway, what film are you going to see?"

"I'm not sure. Joe will probably pick out some gory action fest or something."

"Sounds great!"

"Yeah right."

I heard a child's voice screaming Chris's name in the background on his end of the phone.

"I know man I'll be there in a second." His reply sounded slightly muted as he had his mouth away from the receiver.

"Sounds like they're keeping you busy at least!"

"They really are... little buggers. Anyway it was really nice talking to you, as always."

"You too Chris, I'll call you tonight when I get back from the cinema?"

"Yeah, sounds good. Have a great time. I love you."

"I love you too."

"Bye!"

And then he was gone. I sighed and stood up from the chair by the telephone, put my sunglasses back on and headed outside.
