The alarm clock.
My eyes fluttered open. I was lying on Chris's warm, strong chest in my room at home. Today was the day we were heading back to London to return to University. Usually, we would take the train but seeing as it was the beginning of the year and I had a lot of things to move into my new flat, my mother was driving us back to London. Chris's family would meet us there with his things.
I was excited for the new year. My course looked very interesting, we had some particularly fascinating modules to choose from this year. I was excited to go back to the big city and see some friends I had not seen for months, as well as hopefully make some new ones. There was a lot to look forward to.
But there was a sense of trepidation in the back of my mind. It was nagging at me. There were things I was deeply concerned about. Firstly, whereas last year had not counted towards my overall grade, this year would count. I knew I had to get my head down and consistently focus. I wanted a good career, and for that, I needed the best grade. Considering my work ethic had tailed off in the latter portion of our first year, I still did remarkably well and attained a second overall. Chris, of course, being the intelligent person he is managed a first. I was so proud of him. He was creating incredible music with his friends, all the while achieving so highly with his studies.
I was also concerned about the band. I was happy for him and wanted him to be extremely successful, but I knew there was a price to pay for that. Whether he was quite so aware, I couldn't be certain. Chris was not a mythical creature, he couldn't be in multiple places at one time. He was one person with two arms, two legs, and one beating heart. It worried me, thinking about the toll on our relationship the band had taken towards the end of last year. I feared this year would be worse. I hoped this would prove to be unfounded, but the logical side of me knew it was not.
For now, I looked up at the wonderful man I was sharing my bed with. Chris was sleepily rubbing his eyes, he had classic bedhead, making his curls appear even more unruly.
"Good morning, beautiful," Chris spoke, in his deep, raspy morning voice.
"Good morning." I smiled and kissed him quickly on the lips.
It was nearing the end of September so it was still reasonably light outside considering it was 6:30 AM. We had to be up early to begin the drive back to London, aiming to be there at around 1pm in order to give us sufficient time to move our things in and get acquainted with our new flatmates.
I allowed Chris to use the bathroom first, after a making out with him for a few minutes of course, while I headed downstairs to see whether my mother and Joe were awake.
"Morning!" Joe said cheerfully. He had always been a morning person.
"Sleep well?" I enquired
"Perfectly fine, thanks. You?" He replied
"Yeah, great!"
"Good, I'm glad Chris didn't keep you up all night." He winked
"Joseph!"
He giggled in response. "Brew?"
"Yes please."
"Can you go and ask if mum wants one too? And lover boy."
I rolled my eyes. "Sure."
I wandered into the living room, mother was sat on the sofa watching the news.
"Morning mum." I smiled
"Morning love." She replied, returning the gesture.
"Would you like a cup of tea?" I asked
