AN: Hey guys! Before I start this chapter I just want to explain some changes that I've made. Firstly, I have a new username!! My old one (@ohchrismartin) was associated with a Twitter account I used to run but seeing as I no longer use it, I want to avoid confusion between the two. I had messages asking me about the account but I'm not associated with it anymore! Just because I don't use Twitter, nothing bad, it's a great account :)
Secondly I made a new cover for this book, it was due an update I think! Hope you guys like it. Well I'll stop rambling now, enjoy the chapter! :DChris and I were now back at my house for the final week before we began University again. I could scarcely believe that I was onto my second year already. The past year had absolutely flown to me which could surely only be a good sign that I was enjoying my life once again. My brother, Joe, had just started sixth form as it was already early September so I did not see much of him. I was secretly eager to return to University as it meant that Chris and I would get some alone time. It was torturous to be with him but not able to do much as I was at home with my mother only a thin wall away.
It was one of our last nights before we returned to London for our studies. We decided to go out shopping on the local high street and then have something to eat at one of the many restaurants close by to my house. I lived around a mile and a half from the town centre and it being a sunny day, we decided to walk rather than catch a bus there. Chris firmly grabbed my hand and interlaced his long fingers with mine. We began the trek there at a steady pace, neither of us in a particular hurry.
"Anything you particularly need to buy then love?" Chris glanced down at me and asked.
"Not really. But you know what girls are like, we say we need nothing and end up putting half of the shops out of business." I giggled.
"Ahhh you're right about that. I need some boring stuff like shampoo and deodorant. I can avoid paying London prices!"
"Wow. You're going to save SO much money."
"Oi! Don't ruin my moment. I am but a poor student, struggling to survive. Every saving is a good one."
"What am I going to do with you, Chris?"
"Keep loving me?" He said timidly
"Chris!" I shoved him playfully. "Why would you say that?"
"I was just joking!" He exclaimed
"Mhm." I replied, but some doubt lingered in my mind. It was a serious response to a playful question. But I did not want to ruin the day, so I shrugged it off.
Eventually we arrived in the town centre. I went looking for some clothes. I felt like treating myself to a whole new wardrobe seeing as this was going to be a fresh year. Although I wasn't sure this was what student loans were intended for...
Chris was trailing several feet behind me. He was too polite to say it but he looked incredibly bored.
Finally, I couldn't bear it anymore. "You can go if you want and buy what you need. I'll meet you in, say, 30 minutes?"
"Of course. Outside McDonald's?"
"Sure." I gave him a quick kiss. "See you later." He went bright red and walked out of the shop. He never was much good at public displays of affection. Holding hands was pretty much his limit in busy places.
With Chris gone I moved to the underwear section which I had felt too awkward to be in with him. I was really pampering myself. Nothing can make you feel as sexy as new underwear, plus it would be a pleasant surprise for Chris if he found me wearing it.
Underwear selected, I went to the till to pay. Once finished I walked outside onto the busy High Street and noticed Chris instantly. His mop of unruly curly hair made him easily distinguishable in the crowd. His face lit up as soon as he saw me.
"Did you get what you needed?" I enquired, noticing a plastic bag in his hand.
"Yeah, just boring guy stuff. What did you buy?" Chris asked, motioning towards the bag in my right hand.
"Oh, just lady things."
"Ah." He scratched his head, not really sure what to make of what I said He was in for a treat. Chris reached down and took my left hand in his. "Anyway, I'm getting pretty hungry. Do you want to go and find somewhere to eat?"
"Sure, babe. Wherever you want to go is fine by me."
We started walking along the High Street and eventually found a cute and thankfully reasonably priced Italian restaurant. It was that awkward time in between lunch and dinner so the restaurant was not very busy. The customers were a mix of families and couples.
The waitress showed us to a table by the window. There was a glass with a rose in the middle and it was pretty romantic for a spontaneous lunch/dinner date. Chris and I ordered our drinks and scanned the menu as we waited for their arrival.
"I know it's like the most boring thing to order, but I think I'm gonna get Spaghetti Bolognese. You can't beat the classic." Chris finally spoke, breaking the companionable silence.
"Hmmm I think I'll have some pizza." I pondered. "No, the chicken." I sighed "Okay, no, the pizza."
Chris rolled his eyes jokingly "So indecisive!"
Our drinks finally arrived and we ordered our meals.
"How do you feel about going back to Uni then, love?" Chris asked
"Not too bad. It is what it is, this year really counts I guess."
"It does. But we'll be fine. You're extremely intelligent and I'll always be here if you're struggling."
I smiled at Chris's idealistic view of the world and our relationship. It was true we were very much in love but our honeymoon period had definitely ended. I still cared a tremendous amount for him but somehow we were not as smitten as when we first started dating. That wasn't to say we were on the verge of breaking up, far from it, but it seemed that he did not realise in the same way as I did that we were not perfect. Or maybe he did and he was just in denial. Either way he cared so much for me, on a human level more than anything. I knew that whatever happened between us, I would always have a great amount of respect for him.
"Also, I can't wait to have some alone time with you." Chris said, breaking my train of thought and raising his eyebrows in the process.
"God you're obsessed!" I exclaimed, giggling. "No, I feel the same. It's hard being at home with mum so close..."
"I know sweetie. But not long until we can be alone together for as long as we both want."
I couldn't wait.
The rest of the evening was pretty standard. A lot of hand holding across the table and playing footsie underneath it. Chris even leaned in for a short kiss at the end of the meal. It was very romantic. We also both loved our meals and vowed to return next time Chris came to stay.
On the walk home, Chris's large hand keeping mine safe and warm, I sighed and looked at the handsome man beside me as well as the beautiful summer evening in front of us. This was a day I knew I would look back on as one of the best when I was stressed at University, or Chris and I were having a rough time in our relationship.
I felt prepared for whatever was to come.
I felt prepared for anything with Chris by my side.
