25. A Lovely Mess

You and Ash lay side by side atop a grassy hill, staring up at the fluffy white clouds as they soared across the azure sky. It was a peaceful, spring afternoon, and the tranquil sounds of nature around you remained undisturbed in the absence of children. The hill was situated in a meadow near a small forest, which was no bigger than a regular-sized farm. It was a popular spot with the local school kids on sunny afternoons, but there were none in sight with an hour until home time.

You and Ashton held hands as you lay down, your right hand in his left as you attempted to determine shapes in the clouds above. You were both so in love that every cloud seemed to resemble a certain aspect of your possible future. A car, a house, a pram and even intertwined wedding rings. If a shapeless cloud without determinable form happened to appear, you and Ashton would stress your imagination to the point where it turned into something relevant to your relationship, imagining wild yet marvellous stories along the way.

This was the most you'd ever thought about your future, as daydreaming about what was to come was normally a pointless thing for you. You were more the kind of person to 'live in the moment'. Despite this, you decided it was nice to wander off into your imagination and the depths of the unknown future for a change- especially hand in hand with your most favourite person in the world.

Calum has had a crush on you for a while now and he finally took it upon himself to ask you out. After weeks of preparation, he had finally managed to summon up the courage to walk up to you.

He has always been insecure about himself and has never experienced a relationship for that very reason. He's determined that he will give the relationship his everything, but he is scared that it won't be enough. He thinks you're way too out of his league; that no matter what he does, you'll remain uninterested.

What he doesn't know, of course, is that you'll love him back just as much as he loves you. That you've always been interested in Calum from the moment you first met. That all his flaws and insecurities are beautiful in every way.

He has absolutely nothing to worry about, but of course, he worries anyway.

Relationships.

Bullshit, in your opinion. All your past relationships haven't been real to you as your exes have never given it 100%. They all ended in tears and misery, leaving you with the belief that love is non-existent. That you would be better off on your own.

Luke has been your best friend since before you even learned to walk and over time his feelings for you have grown a lot stronger. He's been there for you through all the heartache and break-ups and it hurts him to know that you've been through all this pain.

He badly wants to change your friendship into something more but he knows how sensitive you get at the mention of 'relationships'. With each passing day he wants you more and more, yet grows more depressed because he thinks he can never have you. That you're not an option. That you don't feel the same way in return.

His depression gets so bad that he decides he can't go on anymore. He plans and plans and plans to persuade you to be his girlfriend, and if it doesn't work out, there is a possibility that he may take his own life.

Michael has known you for a long time. In fact, longer than you've known him. There was a time when you didn't even know he existed, yet he loved you all the same.

He'd never been in a proper relationship before as he'd wanted to save it for the right girl. You'd always been an ideal candidate for a long time and he watched as you became more beautiful. He was much too shy to introduce himself or make a move. It seemed that as time went on, not only did you become more and more beautiful, you also became more and more troubled. Life got more stressful. People changed and moved on and you were in the middle of it all, the same person you were all those years ago.

People left your life as easily as they came, and you soon began to think you weren't good enough for them. Surely if I become a better person people wouldn't abandon me so often. You thought.

You were wrong. You're perfect in every way and don't need to change to please other people. They're in the wrong.

Michael was torn apart. He had his own problems and didn't want to put any more burden on you by coming into your life. He didn't want to mess up and be left by the one who people left so often. Maybe he should just remain invisible, like he had been all these years.

Or perhaps coming into your life would be a blessing? Perhaps a burden shared was a burden halved or even offloaded? He thought about how much easier it could potentially be if you were together. That all your collective problems would wash away and there would be a happy ending.

Just like in the fairy tales.
