24. The Hospital
A S H T O N
The pitch blackness that only seems to exist behind closed eyelids slowly began to dissipate as you opened your eyes. The bright white room blinded you temporarily as you sat up in the hospital bed, your head spinning slightly from the chemicals that had been feeding through the opaque tube in your arm.
"She's awake!" The familiar voice of your boyfriend reached your ears, filling the void of confusion and vertigo with familiar warmth. It wasn't long before Ashton was at your side, his hazel irises peering at you through tortoiseshell rimmed glasses. A mop of brown hair sat atop his head in a mass of unruly curls and his teeth seemed to dazzle whiter than the hospital walls around you.
"How do you feel babe?" He asked, gently pushing the errant strands hair out of your face and planting a kiss on your forehead. The gesture sent your skin tingling.
You tried to speak but the words never escaped your lips. A worried look flashed across Ashton's face. "Does your throat feel okay?"
"It's still a bit numb." You managed, surprised by the unfamiliar voice that escaped your lips. It was a bit more high pitched than normal. Less than a few hours ago, a woman in a pristine white coat with a light blue mask obscuring her mouth and nose from sight, injected you with some anesthetic, before proceeding to remove your tonsils. The procedure seemed alien to you; terrifying yet exciting at the same time. You had never had an operation before and you were still feeling the nervous chills you got before you were put to sleep.
"It'll go back to normal soon." Ashton smiled. "Do you need me to get you anything?"
"No, it's okay Ash. I just want you to stay."
“I’m not going anywhere.” Ashton clasped your hands in his, his touch comforting and familiar. “Hey, I made you something.”
He pulled his iPhone out of the pocket in his jeans and swiped his thumb across the screen before entering a four digit pin. He then reached and grabbed some headphones from his other pocket and untangled them painstakingly, frowning as he worked on the little knots in the cord.
"Here." He gave a slight chuckle as he brushed your hair behind your ears and put the headphones in. The opening piano notes to Viva la Gloria by Green Day began to fill your ears. You looked at the screen to find that he had made you a playlist titled: ‘Get Well Soon’.
"Hope you like it." He smiled.
Your heart swelled with appreciation and affection. You were so lucky to have this wonderful human being beside you. "I love you so much." You whispered, closing your eyes as you melted into the song and drifted into your own little world, Ashton's fingers were still intertwined with yours, anchoring you to consciousness.

"Oooh, what colour cast are you going to pick?" Calum asked as he drove you to the hospital. You had just recently broken your ankle whilst you were out for an evening jog with Calum; an event you'd rather not experience again.
Your crutches lay across the back, threatening to fall off the leather seats with every sharp turn of the wheel. Your aching ankle was bandaged in a shroud of white plaster with an interior of soft cotton. It was itchy and uncomfortable, but you'd soon get used to it.
"I don't know, what colour do you think?" You smiled, trying to keep up the cheery facade you had managed to pull off since the day of the accident. You always wanted to be happy around Calum so you never fail to try your best to push away the pain and stress that your injury has inflicted upon you within the past few days.
