Lyra fell into a restless, dreamless sleep that night. The whiskey had helped in calming her nerves but didn't make falling asleep any easier. She woke up early the next day and noticed a neatly wrapped letter on her vanity. It looked like it was wrapped in an old envelope and it was sealed with a gorgeous emerald wax seal. It was decorated with a big M and something was scribbled underneath it. Sanctimonia Vincet Simper.
"Purity will always conquer." Lyra read out loud.
She was a Pureblood child, of course, she knew Latin. She recognised it as the Malfoy family crest and motto. She wondered why she had received a letter from the Malfoys. She took her letter knife from her drawer and carefully opened the letter without damaging the seal. She collected the seals and proudly displayed them on her wall. She did not know why she felt pride in the seals, but it gave her something to do and collect. She aimed to have one from every family that was a part of The Sacred Twenty-Eight. She opened her letter.
Dear Ms Rosier,
I am delighted to share with you that you have been accepted into the Pureblood Association at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. I must admit that I was surprised when I received your application. However, that does not make me any less excited. Finally accepting your bloodstatus is a marvellous thing you should be proud of.
Our meetings will be held bi-weekly from the beginning of the new school year. I am looking forward to getting to know you better and introducing you to the other members of the Association. Please bring eveningwear with you at your departure.
Included, you will find a pin, a symbol of your membership. Wear it proudly on the first day of school.
With regards,
Lucius Abraxus Malfoy
Head of the Pureblood Association
Lyra closed the letter. Confusion was all she felt. She had definitely not applied for membership. Then, it clicked. Her mother. Her mother had applied for her. Without her consent! Lyra was fuming. She did not agree with the Association's views and did not want any part in it. She picked up the pin and threw it across the room. She was about to grab a piece of parchment and write back, saying that it was one big miss-understanding and cancelling her membership when she heard a knock on the door. Without giving an answer the door opened.
"Are you okay Ly?" Her brother asked her.
She had apparently made more noise than she initially thought.
Without saying anything she grabbed Evan by his sleeve and pulled him inside, shutting the door. She sat him on her bed and handed him the letter.
Evan swiftly read through it and put it down.
"I assume that you did not apply for membership, did you?" Evan spoke softly.
"I most certainly did not!" Lyra exclaimed.
Evan quickly understood what had happened. Their mother must have applied for her.
"I assume mother enrolled you." He stood up, walking around the room.
He had received a similar letter before he even started his first year. Their mother had applied for him as well. Evan had not minded it though. He was shy and saw it as an opportunity to make new friends. He looked around the room for the pin that should be included in the letter. He could not find it. Lyra must have chucked it somewhere.
"Accio pin!" He shouted.
A small silver object came flying his way and he caught it gracefully with his right hand.
