I woke up before Donnie the next morning, so I had to drop a note telling him what I had going on...then left. I needed to go talk to my brother cos he sounded serious last night. But first I had to do something very important.
I stopped by the grocery store and shopped as much as I could, filled up a bunch of bags then drove across town to go see Wayne's mom. She was like a third mom to me for a long time. I would always spend the night at they house and she'd make sure i was good when I did. And most importantly Wayne loved her more than anything in the world, so i did too.
I've been trying my best to take care of her as much as I can since I became an adult. Even while I was away I'd send money to Armani to keep her fridge stocked, especially during the lockdown. But now I couldn't wait to see her. She was the only other person I knew who took my boy's passing as hard as i did.
She screamed in surprise when she saw me, shedding a tear. "Nuh uh, don't do it ma. You about to make a grown ass man cry in broad day light." I warned her.
She chuckled and flicked my forehead harshly, making me yelp. "You ain't too grown to get whooped boy, don't cuss in my house."
"I'm sorry." I apologized, grinning from ear to ear. The nostalgia was killing me.
She then moved on to her favorite question of all time. "Did you get taller? You look like you got taller? What they feeding you over there?"
She always asked that. I've been the same height since I was seventeen, i did not get taller. "Maybe you got shorter ma." I teased.
She gasped, rolling her neck to look at me. "Oh you're definitely angling for a whooping child." She laughed as she said it.
The next two hours went as it always did, bittersweet. We talked and caught up on what's been going on with each other, then we talked about Wayne a little. She gave me a picture of me and Wayne she'd found and i took it and left without looking at it.

I called Armani before i left but he ain't answer so I went over to his crib, but there was no one there. The only other place he could be at was his shop, which was where I was headed.
I was driving Kamala's car by the way, and it kept sounding like crickets were having a party in the engine. But hel naw I was not fixing it, they hadda learn to do these things they damn self. They treated their cars like toys, no maintenance, nothing. That shit irked me.
I fixed the car.
I pulled up in front of my bro's shop shortly after. As kids, my brothers and i used to learn how to cut hair on each other. We went on YouTube and learned, then practiced with each other's heads. That way we didn't have to go nowhere to get cuts. But Armani went a little further with his skill and opened up a shop. His girl had a section where she did weaves or whatever, while he ran the rest of the place. I used to be here a lot before i travelled. Especially when Don was locked up. It provided the distraction that I needed.
