We approached Brayden's door behind a miscellaneous group of kids. Oliver shoved his hands in his pockets and snickered as he listened to the little kids whisper about our matching costumes. I gave him a slight hit in the stomach, but couldn't help smiling myself. This was the closest I've had to a couples costume; I'm just upset with who my partner is. But, damn it, he did look cute in green.
A little boy dressed in a Superman costume rang the doorbell, and in a synchronized motion, all his little friends opened their bags. Oliver and I turned to look at one another, when Callie answered the door in her Scooby attire.
"TRICK OR TREAT!" the kids screamed.
"Take as much as you want kids," she said, crouching to their level. "This isn't my house."
Through scattered thank you's, the kids left. Callie looked up, saw Oliver and I and panicked.
"Brayden, get your ass up here and deal with this!" she yelled.
"You're in just as much trou-" I was cut off by the door slamming on my face.
"Callie, you can't swear in front of- Oh." Brayden started as he opened the door seconds later, wearing a white crew neck with an orange bandanna around his neck and blue jeans. "Hey guys! Happy Halloween."
I turned to Oliver. "Bennett, go straight ahead and turn right. The door at the end of the hallway leads to the basement. Why don't you go properly introduce yourself to Callie and Lydia?" He followed my instructions. "Brayden Moore, come outside right now. We need to have a chat."
Brayden came out and closed the door, sitting on the little step that leads into his house. I followed. There was a silence, because in all honesty, I didn't get past this point in my head. The drive wasn't long enough. Thankfully, Brayden spoke.
"Look, I'll admit, I knew what I was doing when I asked Oliver to come here tonight. Callie mentioned that you might've liked him, and since I had already met him, we thought we could try to get you guys together," he said, genuinely. "But that was before you too had a rough Thursday together, and I couldn't just uninvite him, so we figured we'd let you to find out for yourselves."
"You really thought you guys were slick last night? You kept throwing the word friend around like you were speaking a different language. I'm just mad that you felt you couldn't tell me."
"I know, I know. We messed up, and we should've told you last night, but we didn't. Look, if you want me to try and get Oliver to leave-"
"Don't even think about it. He told me he wouldn't come if I didn't want him to, but we're turning over a new leaf."
"That's what I like to here!" Brayden said, standing up. "Ready to party? I've got a twelve pack of ginger ale with your name on it."
"You betcha!"
