I watch as my boyfriend hugs a girl, who just a few minutes ago, was claiming he was her boyfriend. All I wanted to see in this moment was Oliver's face so I could decipher his emotions, but there was no way to do so discreetly. I did my best to paint on a smile.
"What are you doing here?" he asked as he pulled her out of the hug.
"Surprising you!" she giggled. "College breaks are way longer than high school ones so my winter break started on Friday afternoon. I took the first flight out that I could so we could spend the holiday together."
Spend the holiday together? Who did this girl think she was? Obviously I knew he ran into her and they spent some time together when Oliver was in Chicago for Thanksgiving, but this makes it seem like something else, something much worse, occurred. Did he even tell his friends about me? Did Oliver cheat on me?
"You can't just do this, you can't just show up here," Oliver made his first attempt at making eye contact with me. I didn't look back for I was gluing my eyes to the floor.
"I thought you'd be excited to see me."
"What did you not understand from Thanksgiving?"
There he goes again with Thanksgiving.
Although I felt I owed him nothing in this moment, I couldn't help but feel the need to interject. "Why don't you guys go catch up?"
"Joy, it's not what you th-"
"No, go. I'm fine here and you guys clearly need to talk some things out. So, please. Go."
"Listen to your co-worker, Ollie, let's go," pleaded Alexis, putting out her hand to grab it.
"Fine," he muttered, ignoring her hand and walking over to me to plant a kiss on my lips. I felt used, but I have to admit, seeing the look of surprise on Alexis's face made me a bit better. Before he left he whispered something to me. "It's not what you think. I'll explain everything later."
And then they were gone.
I turned to the back of the store, where Mr. Bennett was sitting behind his desk and paraded over to his area.
"Mr. Bennett," I started. "I'm gonna give you one chance to be honest with me and with what I just witnessed, I want the truth since I can't guarentee I'll be getting it from Oliver anytime soon. Who is Alexis?"
"Sit down, Joy, and I'll tell you everything I know."
