the first time i introduced tobio to my little sister, they both just awkwardly stared at each other.
"um. wanna apple juice?"
"do you guys have milk instead?"
mika nodded.
"i'll have that."
and they both trailed into the kitchen with me staring blankly at the backs of both of them.
as you can imagine, they get along great. mika has always been relatively quiet, but more attracted to louder people to fill the silence, like natsu and shoyo, and my brother and i. tobio is, for some reason, the only exception.
my boyfriend and the ten year old sometimes hangout when i come home late from rehearsals. i'll just walk in through the door and see both of them on the living room floor playing concentration and munching on the pocky i kept in my secret stash.
"that's- that's mine?!?"
they both smirk at me as i contemplate who to murder first.
i once called mika, mika-san. to which she just stared at me and said, "you don't have to add the san. we're pretty much family now, right?" she said it so nonchalantly, but i almost choked on the apple juice she'd convinced me to drink.
"we... we are?" i asked after i'd stopped coughing. mika looked up from the math homework i was supposed to be helping her with. "yeah. you're here almost everyday. that must mean you really care for my sister, right? and if you care for her, then that should mean you'll stay with her for a long time. and if you stay with her for a long time, then eventually you'll get married," she slowly ticked off the steps on her small fingers. "right?"
when she got to the last step, i felt my face grow red. "i- i mean." i looked away and drew thin lines through the condensation on my glass. mika leaned in, trying to catch my eye. "you're planning on doing all those things... right? right, tobio-chan?" i felt my lips quirk up at the way she said my name. it was too similar to the way mizuki said it.
"yeah." i said finally, looking up at the little girl. my cheeks were hot, but i gave her a small smile. "yeah, i'm gonna marry her." i said, my voice surprisingly even as the words left my mouth. and when they did, a sure feeling settled in the pit of my stomach. it felt right.
mizuki's imoto gave me one of her rare smiles, a large one that spread across her face. it was so pretty, so cute, i couldn't help but reach over and pat her head affectionately.
"so, when is it?" she said excitedly, picking up her pencil to twirl in her fingers. "i'm not free on weekends 'cause of ensemble and regular cello lessons, so you'll make it on a weekday right? let's have it in two weeks, since next week there's a special running on tv the whole week."
i looked at her with wide eyes. "it's not going to be soon! maybe like at least 9 years." i said, waving my arms in the air. she pouted and lowered her head to rest against the kitchen table. "aw. i was hoping i could wear the new dress i got last week."
laughing a little, i traced the rim of my cup. mika turned her head, cheek still pressed against her textbook. "anyway, tobio-chan. don't add the 'san' to my name. you can add 'chan', since i call you tobio-chan too."
i glanced at her glowing features, a little surprised. "oh. mn." i smiled a little too. "okay, mika-chan." my face instinctively flushed a little, the unfamiliar honorific feeling strange on my tongue. but looking back at mika-chan, her face shining with a wide smile, i couldn't feel truly embarrassed at all.
