(october 27)
a/n: i legit forgot most of the game. i only remember like tadashi got better at serving, shoyo had some sort of realization moment (??), and tsukishima had major character development. so please don't hate me i liTERALLY DON'T REMEMBER THIS ENTIRE ARC WAS 10 WHOLE EPISODES LONG
the game between shiratorizawa and karasuno was probably one of the most intense and important games of their team.
i made time to attend the game at the sendai stadium, coincidentally that game being the first game that i saw them play.
tobio had told me how big of an opponent shiratorizawa was, since i knew absolutely nothing about volleyball. i had heard the name 'ushiwaka' around the school, and i knew shiratorizawa was a prestigious school when it came to academics.
but it was completely different seeing the team in person. ushijima was huge, and when i saw them play, i realized how intense the air in the stadium was. the shiratorizawa team was good. really good.
throughout the game, i was sitting next to yachi-chan, saeko-san, and shimada-kun. when yachi saw i was there, she excitedly thanked me for coming to cheer them on. i smiled back at her, and said, "of course i'm coming to cheer karasuno's team on! also, since my boyfriend is here." i laughed.
saeko gasped and looked at me. "boyfriend? who's your boyfriend on the team?" she asked. i pointed down to tobio who was yelling at hinata about something. "kageyama tobio. the one shaking the redhead." i smirked at the pair's usual chaotic behavior, looking back at saeko. "i'm takagi mizuki, by the way."
tanaka's sister smiled. "saeko. tanaka saeko. nice to meet you, tobio-kun's girlfriend," she said animatedly.
shimada-kun introduced himself to me too, and he said something i heard a lot from people who knew tobio. "i'm a little surprised kageyama-kun can have a soft spot too. he's always seemed so focused on volleyball." i laughed at that, saying a lot of people said that.
"to be honest, i'm quite surprised at that too." i replied, turning back to the court.
i had watched tobio play volleyball of course. in practices. when i watched him set to shoyo. i watched him practice receives and spiking and serves all the time. but watching him in a game... was completely different.
the way his dark blue eyes darted around the court, aware of every single player's position and simultaneously keeping track of the ball and his own specific movements. completely on alert constantly, each action of his deliberate and precise.
i think i fell even more in love, watching him like this. so perfect.
when the fourth set rolled around and tendou was really picking a fight with both tsukishima and tobio, i realized tobio's usually perfect and analytical movements were slowed. i knew this would happen the moment i heard they'd have to play five sets.
tobio had lots of stamina, but not this much. he was the setter, he touched the ball more than any of the other players on the team. he was constantly jumping, to set, to block, to run.
i clasped my hands together and prayed he'd make it.
i breathed a sigh of relief when they swapped sugawara-senpai out so kageyama could rest. i caught his eye in the box with the other sitting out players, and gave him a smile and a thumbs up. his cheeks went pink and he held his hand up in a wave.
fast forward to the end.
the moment shoyo spiked the last winning ball, the entire stadium seemed to erupt in the karasuno cheers. i didn't even cheer immediately, just looked at shock on the court. i made eye contact with tobio, my hands over my mouth. he looked absolutely exhausted, but his eyes reflected pure joy and relief when they met mine.
when i could finally get to him after they'd changed and met up with everyone outside, i ran up to him and threw my arms around his neck. he was surprised, but hugged me back with the smallest smile on his face.
"congratulations! you were absolutely stellar, loves. i'm so, so, so happy for you guys." i almost started crying in happiness when i pulled away from him. "i should really come to your games more. you looked so cool out there." i laughed a little. "when you guys won, i kind of wanted to point at you and yell, 'that's my boyfriend!'" i joked, smiling.
tobio leaned down to kiss the top of my head. "maybe you should do that." he murmured into my hair. "thank you for coming. i think i played better knowing you were here." he said a bit hesitantly. i widened my eyes, looking up at him and quirking an eyebrow. "really? well then, i better come with you to nationals then." when i said this, he actually smiled really big, and scratched the back of his neck.
"wow." he said, looking at the sky. "we're going to nationals." his familiar frown appeared, and i knew he was already thinking about how to prepare for that. i reached up and poked the middle of his forehead.
he stepped back a bit, glaring at me a little. i giggled and squished his cheeks between both my hands before saying, "don't worry about nationals just yet, tobio. you just won against a powerhouse school. one of the biggest ones in japan." i pulled his head down to kiss him lightly on the tip of his nose. "you can think about celebrating that now, okay? let's go get meat buns with the team!"
so for once, i let myself stop thinking about what i was going to do next, and gently took her hand. we walked back to the others with content smiles on our faces, and i finally was able to appreciate a win.
