I'll Put Up a Fight Not Giving Up

I could not wait any longer – I had to go now. Right now.
I got off my bed, and started pacing back and forth around the room, trying to come up with a plan. I did not have to pack anything, first of all, as I did not really own anything precious. I only had this necklace that was left for me by my mother hid in my closet. I had never really worn it, as Father hated seeing me wearing it.
I fished out the necklace from the bottom of my closet. I held it under the lamp. The chain was made of platinum, and at the end of it hanged a platinum framed ruby. It was not a big one, shaped as a flower, but it looked beautiful. The ruby glistered under the light, and I admired it from various angles. This was the only belonging that I had to bring with me.
Then I sat down at the table to plan the escape out. For all I knew, there would be two or three guards guarding the bridge above the moat, and I had to cross the bridge and go into the forest, towards the town. How could I distract the guards and escape? I could not fight them, obviously, and if I was seen, then I would be dead. They might call for help and more guards would come, making the situation worse. Then Father would know about my escape, and he probably would lock me up, with a lock this time, so I could not even go to the library or something.
So I could not be seen or heard, but how?
I thought about it hard. Wait – didn’t the guards change position at midnight? Their guard would be down when they exchange post so I could slip out more easily. It was still a bit early, so I still had a couple of hours left to figure out the rest of my escape.
I looked down at myself. I put the necklace around my neck, and I realized I could not wear this gown to town as it would be too eye-catching. I had read some books where there were drawings of normal people, and they did not wear such gowns, they usually wore something close to the servants. I had even seen a couple of people from town being brought into the castle for a few times, and they also wore some plain dresses.
I stood up and went over to my closet again, trying to find something more low-profile to wear. Luckily, I had this dress with was made by some plain cloth, so I stripped down and changed into that plain dress.
Now I had my outfit ready, my necklace round my neck, and a plan to escape.
Suddenly, my stomach rumbled. I had not eaten anything since breakfast, although it was just before noon, as I usually woke up quite late, just like this morning, and Charlotte knew not to wake me up to early. Oh Charlotte, maybe I would miss her. A bit.
It was now completely dark outside, and I decided to go and steal something from the kitchen to eat. I could not escape with an empty stomach – what if I could not find anything in town to eat? I knew I needed money to buy stuff, but I did not have any. So I would have to count on some nice people to lend me food.
I quietly walked down the stairs, walked down the dimly lit empty hallway and peeked into the kitchen. There was no one there.
I slipped into the kitchen, and let my eyes adjust to the darkness for a minute. I could still see by the moonlight coming in from the window. I tiptoed to the cupboard where I always found food from when I could not sleep, and got some biscuits. I put them into my pocket, and ready to go back to my room.
But then I heard footsteps outside the kitchen. I jumped at the sound, and quickly hid behind the counter, trying to look at the door from behind the counter. Someone pushed open the door, and I dodged from the light coming in from the hallway, and I could hear Rosary.
“That little devil, she always gets on my nerves,” I heard she tell someone, “I hate her to death. How I wish she would get into some serious troubles and Father would lock her up forever.”
“Princess Rosary, I think you should create more drama the next time you bump into her, the drama was obviously not enough last time,” that was Gwen.
“I know right! I should walk around tomorrow while being close to where Father is, and make her get mad, so if we argue loudly, Father will hear. Then I will make her hit me, and talk Father into locking her up, instead of starving her for the night,”
That ROSARY! It was her who made Father do that to me!
“That is a great idea, Princess Rosary,” Gwen said with her disgusting and fake voice.
Ha! But little did they know I would be gone by tomorrow.
Apparently, Rosary came in to get some sweet snacks to eat, and talk with Gwen without being heard. But they did not know I was here, and I could her every word that had escaped from their mouth.
I waited until they had left, and went back to my room. I finished the biscuits and waited until it was time to go.
I looked around my room, the place that I had been in most of the time for as long as I remembered once last time before I put out the lamp and closed the door behind me. I practically ran down the stairs, down the hallway, down some stairs again, and suddenly I heard someone around the corner so I halted my feet. I crouched behind a statue against the wall, and it was only a guard patrolling. I waited until he had gone past, and resumed my run, the run to freedom. At last I arrived at the front door; I used all my strength to pull the huge wooden door open. I slipped in between the gap and hid behind the line of potted plants next to the door, and observed the guards.
There were two guards tonight, facing the bridge, with their backs to me. They were standing still like two statues, and no one was speaking. I quickly looked around my surroundings, and even though when they were exchanging with some other guards, it was still difficult to get pass them – the bridge was not a short one, and even if I had run across the bridge, I would still have to run for about 50 feet before reaching the forest.
“Hi guys,” I jumped at the sound. It was two guards coming from the wooden door that I had just passed, and the other two at the bridge turned around.
“Oh, it’s time already?” they came closer to the door, and talked with the new comers.
I used this chance to think. I quietly moved behind the plants, using their tall figures to hide me from the guards. I grabbed a stone off the floor, and threw it as far as possible towards the moat. I made it land in the water around the far left of the moat, and the guards all turned around towards the water splashing sound.
“Who’s there” one guard said, alarmed.
They all advanced to the source of the sound, and as their backs were all facing me, I jumped at my chance. I ran away, across the bridge, towards the forest as fast as possible. I did not dare to look back, with the wind blowing my hair back, stinging my eyes. Once I was immersed in the forest, I collapsed on the ground, panting hard. I could not hear any shouting behind me, so I guessed I had escaped successfully. At least I had reached the forest, out of bound of the moat. I smiled to myself.
I continued my journey, walking deeper into the forest. I had walked for what seemed like forever, but the moon was still hanging high above in the sky. I was totally exhausted. Luckily I have eaten something, I thought to myself.
At last I had finished my journey in the forest. I was finally setting foot in town. Right in front of me was the edge of the town, with fences surrounding the stone floored area. This must be the remote part of the town, as there were not many houses here. Only some sort of taller houses were scattered in this area, and there were only a few street lamps.
I climbed over the fence, and maybe I was too tired, I fell onto the stone floor when I tried to get down. I did not bother to stand up again; I was really, really tired.
“Are you alright?” suddenly I heard footsteps, and a man’s voice. I looked up weakly, and saw two figures coming closer. They crouched down beside me, and I tried to sit up. One of them helped me sit on the floor, holding my shoulders. I looked at his face, and I still could see the beauty even though my eyes refused to open properly.
The boy in front of me looked more or less the same age as me, and he had beautiful green eyes and blond hair sweeping across his face.
“How are you feeling?” the boy next to him asked, and he looked identical to the one in front of me. Was I too tired that I saw double? But when I tried to look closer, the other boy did look different to the one holding my shoulders. The one helping me sit up had fuller lips, and he began to say to the other one, “Edward, I think—”
And I went black and collapsed into the boy’s arms.
