"Can you please stop being an idiot?" Pj begged his friend Chris.
"I don't know what you mean," Chris said as he destroyed a zombie on the screen before him.
"You've been different ever since you broke up with y/n," Pj said as he bashed a button.
"Again," Chris repeated. "I don't know what you mean."
"Well for one," Pj grunted as he did a difficult set of moves with the controller. "You used to beat me in this game, and now you can't." Pj said a little triumphantly as he watched his side of the screen flash "winner".
"You're basing my mental health on my video game ability?" Chris demanded, grabbing a handful of popcorn.
"Well, it's more than that, obviously," Pj rolled his eyes. "You've been melancholy, more secluded, and you make negative comments about literally every couple you see."
"Because couples are stupid, and deserve to die," Chris said jokingly, throwing a bit of popcorn at his friend.
"Oh really? Even your friends like Felix and Marzia? Huh? I saw the way you were grimacing when we saw them today. Admit it, you miss her, and you're a wreck."
"Nope," Chris shook his head, even though he knew he was lying.
....
"May I ask what was wrong with this one?" Your friend asked you, referencing the date you'd just come back from.
"He was boring," you said as you made some tea.
"It's always something isn't it," your friend laughed.
"What do you mean?" You asked, even though you knew what she was going to say.
"Ever since Chris, you always have a problem with the guys you go out with," she said, grabbing a chip.
"I know but, I just can't get over him for some reason. Sometimes I think we made a mistake, breaking up," you said sadly.
"I mean you said you both agreed it wasn't worth it," your friend said.
"I know but, I mean maybe we were stupid, I don't think we made a good decision."
"Boop!" A noise sounded from your computer. Chris had uploaded a video. You frowned at the title.
"I'm single and I love it."
The title was like a hard punch to the chest. You hoped it was a joke, maybe it was a sketch. Unfortunately, as you watched, you got angrier and angrier, and depressed. Chris was going on and on about how love didn't exist, and shit like that. This was exactly why you'd broken up, he didn't seem to take anything seriously, and yet you missed his carefree spirit so much. Your heart was pulling two ways. One way wanted to forget Chris, move on, remember how immature he could be. The other wanted to immediately call him, and ask him if your relationship had just been a joke. You hoped he'd say it wasn't, that he still loved you, that he didn't mean anything. You wished he missed you, but it didn't appear that that was the way things were going. You slammed your laptop shut, feeling the tears prick your eyes. You knew it was just some dumb video, but still.
"Oh sweetheart," your friend said sadly as she watched your eyes well up. She tried to comfort you, but it was a bit useless.
....
It'd been a couple of days since Chris's infamous "I'm single and I love it" video and you were absolutely dreading seeing him at Summer In The City. You felt ill every time you thought about it. You were a small YouTuber and weren't on any panels so avoiding him should be pretty simple.
