I walk into the crowded classroom expecting to see my friend, Asha, but it isn't her sitting in the desk behind mine... instead, it's a cute boy I have never seen before. His hair is longer than most of the boys in my class, he has his styled bangs pulled over his eyes just enough that he can still see. His eyes... they are a beautiful dark green with a ring of brown around the outside. He is wearing the standard uniform for our school with the crest of a lion and bear fighting in a feathered circle. He has the dark colored jacket open and the top three buttons of the pure white shirt undone, so a part of his chest was visible. His hands, at first glance, appear to be smooth, they were locked within one another atop the desk as he intently gazed out the medium window to his left.
As I looked at him longer, my heart beat hastened, I watched in awe at the beautiful silhouette that lay against the light of the rising sun. I snapped out of it when one of the jocks tried to get into the room, but couldn't because I was in the middle of the doorway. He called out my name and ordered me to sit, I marched forward, my arms swung at my side in an obvious stick like manner that made me look like a love struck fool who had never learned to walk properly. I got to my desk, pulled out the wooden chair and sat down stiffly as if I had a metal rod holding my spine together. I felt a soft tap on the back of my shoulder, so I turn slowly to find the pale boy fidgeting with his fingers on his lap under the desk.
I try to sound as not nervous as I could, but I don't think it worked as well as I had previously hoped, "Y- yeah?" the question came out as a stutter instead of the confident 'Yeah?' that I was going for. I mean who wouldn't want to sound cool in front of the new kid, am I right?
The boy's face was quick to become flushed, his anxiety was written on his face. "I'm Conrad. Nice to meet you." He smiles slightly and pushed out his hand for me to shake, his red cheeks stayed the bright cherry red they were from the start. I shook his hand in a slow, controlled motion against each other. He looked at me while he put his limp limb down back to lap, he then fixed his gaze his hands that were brawling in his nervous attempts at talking to me. "Do you want to be friends? You look like someone I used to know. I hope we can be friends." A huge smile spread across his face, I can't help but smile back. I nod giving him the affirmative answer he needs, I turn back to my desk then realize that I hadn't given him my information. I turn back around and write my name and number on his hand with my blue BIC pen. I grab his hand, it feels soft like the petals of a fresh bloomed flower in spring. As I grab his hand he jerks back in surprise of my sudden action. He looks at me with curious eyes while I put my information on his clammy palm. When I finish, he looks down at his palm to find out my name in order to thank me properly.
"Zo-ri-na?" he questions, a guise of confusion washing over his face, as he looks over my name a couple more times.
I look at him in bewilderment. "What do you mean, 'Zorina'?"
The boy, Conrad, responds excitedly, "I used to know a Zorina when I lived here about 10 years ago, we played together a lot when we were kids. What's your last name? "
I am caught off guard at his last question, because he asked so suddenly, "It's Frye..." His face lights up in utter surprise and then what looks like euphoria take it's place on his perfect countenance. "What's wrong?"
"Rina!? No way!? I don't believe this? Don't you remember me?" His face became full of excitement.
I scan over Conrad's wild features, the way his eye's became big and his speech slurs with intense emotion, "I don't really recognize you ...the only kid I played with when I was 6 was... I guess Connie, but he left when he turned 7 to England."
Conrad's face softens, a big smile appears on his face. A beautiful and familiar smile that's now replacing his once excited composure. "I'm Connie, Rina. My dad's job had us move to England, but my mom had enough of my dad not being around and his damned anger issues, so we left and came back here." He sighs in content. "I was hoping I would see you again. You know, I never stopped thinking about you in the 10 years I've been gone." His smile brightened up the room.
My heart skips a beat as I notice distinct similarities between Connie and Conrad, they have the same unique eyes, the same smile that's warm enough to melt an ice age, and the way he gets overly excited over things so teenie. The more I look the more I realize they are the same people, just Conrad is older now. My face became calm, I can feel every muscle relax a little as I spoke, "I cried every night before I went to bed for like a month because you left. You were my only friend and you disap-" I was cut off by our teacher calling out names for roll, mine was the 9th name on the list and Conrad's was 12th.
"Don't worry I cried too, but my mom always told me that you were crying too which she knew would make me stop." He giggles as his whispered voice stops.
After roll was taken, we didn't talk much until lunch which we spent talking about all the time we had missed and past events that made us laugh. I even sprayed my milk one time because he brought up when we were at the park and I had run into a pole I even saw but still ended up running full speed into the damn thing.
Before I know if the end of the day is here and we have to go home. Conrad and I walk out to the school gates together and I put out a suggestion that he and his mom should come to my house sometime and have dinner. He smiles and said that he would bring it up tonight with his mom and will let me know how it goes. With that, he turns to the direction of his house and walks cheerfully down the street, waving goodbye to me as his back gets further and further away.
"Goodbye..." I whisper to his disappearing figure as the sun set on this beautiful Monday evening.
The next day I walk into the classroom and notice my friend Asha had returned. She is trying to tell Conrad to get out of her seat, and he keeps telling her that the teacher had him sit there yesterday so he's staying. I catch myself giggle a little at the silly bickering of my two friends.
"Zori, tell this idiotic male, that this is my seat, not his ugly butt!" Asha yells over to me from the other side of the room. I walk over to see if I can try to mend the broken situation. "Asha, Conni- I mean Conrad was put here by the teacher when he came in because it was empty at the moment. He also might have told him that he likes looking out the window and needs a seat next to one." I scratch my head and let out a little giggle. "Our teacher moved you to the seat in front of me since that student got expelled last week." I point to the empty desk in front of mine that is leaning snugly against the wall, but does not have a window next to it. This is because the kid that got expelled, broke the whole wall and it had to be covered up with something so they put plaster over it and made the gap into a new wall.
Asha rolls her eyes and reluctantly sits down in the seat. "I guess this will be okay." She leans in close to me, hiding her hand in front of her mouth. "Anyway, who is that boy? Why did you start to call him Connie?" I can tell she added some attitude with the last part, like she knows something that I don't.
I give her a suggestive look, hoping she gets the hint that I will talk to her later about it. She nods fiercely in recognition of our silent conversation. The teacher took role, which begun our day of class.
Lunch has finally arrived, I grab Asha to go to the bathroom in order to tell her who this boy exactly is. I explain to her what my relationship with Conrad is, I also tell her in fast tongues, that ever since I was little I have liked him more than a friend. Now that we are together again, the spark that was once unknown to me in my childish state, I know that what I felt for him was...is more than just a simple friendship, that I suppose never went away. Even after not seeing each other for almost 10 years. "Asha, please don't tell him about my feelings. I plan on telling him when I feel it's the right time so please don't say anything." Asha nods, consecrating the fact that she won't tell him, even if it is tortured out of her.
We go back to the classroom to finish our lunch, but we can't find Conrad. The seat he was sitting in moments before, is completely empty. He disappeared and we have no idea where to. Did he leave? Did he go to the bathroom? "Oh my God!" I exclaimed. I start to run down to the nurse, leaving behind a very surprised Asha, standing in the doorway of the classroom, her jaw open wide like it was unhinged like a snake.
