We are able to catch the last bus to New York. I pull two tickets out of my right pocket, showing them to the gruff looking driver, he nods and waves Conrad and I to the seats behind him. We find a seat about four from the back and decide to sit there. The seats are covered with a rough coth like other public buses, the seat pattern is black, red and gray with the shapes of pasely's covering it. We take a seat, I take the window side while Conrad gets the one beside me and wait for the bus to move, it jerks forward making everyone follow the same motion.
I look out the window as everything passes by in a blur. We are still in Ohio, but we are going to be close to New York soon enough. I tap on Conrad's shoulder telling him to look out the window, but he just moans and looks the other way.
I sort of understand what he feels, I mean he is going to see his father, who he hasn't seen since he moved a couple months ago. He must be angry at his father for what he has done or for calling him. I can understand, but I still can not imagine how much anger and pain he must be going through. I look away from the window and gaze at Conrad's melancholy expression.
I place my hand on his left shoulder, "Are you okay?"
He looks over to me and nods. "It's just that, I'm worried about meeting him, you know. I mean I have no idea what he wants nor what he might to do to me." He shakes his head, pushing away the feeling. "I'm going to have you experience New York at it's finest."
I look at him confused. "You've been there before?" My eyes pop wide open.
He nods a smile on his face. "Yeah, when mom and I left, we stopped in New York for a couple days. We went to the Statue of Liberty, but we couldn't go up because they have her closed off for some reason. We ate out a lot, but it's so expensive." He sat back as he reminisced about the New York he came to a couple months ago. "Rina, I'm going to take you to a couple places before we meet my dad okay?" His smile is warm and happy as he looks at me, but his eyes are saying so much more. He is scared, but doesn't want me to worry, even though I already am.
The bus trip is another hour before we actually make it to the Big Apple. I continue looking out the window at all the passing cars and trucks and other buses. It's amazing how many people actually text and drive and then talk on the phone like it's no big deal. When the traffic is stopped, a couple people take their dogs out and let them go to the bathroom in the grass. I laugh a little when I see this because the one brown wiener dog, looks just like the one that I had when I was little.
About a half hour has passed, the traffic is moving a little faster now and we are closer to New York than before. Tons of yellow taxis flood the road, passing us like a yellow ocean waving us into the city. Buses buzzing around like madmen, trying to get to their destination on time. Conrad bends over me to look out the window, his expression is filled with joy as he remembers every bit of his time in this city.
"I can't wait to show you everything, this is going to be so fun." He gets closer to the window and softens his voice to just below a whisper. "I love you."
"What?" I look at him wondering what he said, I couldn't hear him over the sound of us going through the Lincoln tunnel.
He smiles and sits back into his seat. "Nothing. It's okay. I'm sure you will find out later." The way his smile is reaching his ears, makes me wonder what could have made him so happy, but I decide to let it go because whatever it is, I'm glad he's smiling.
Our bus trip has officially come to an end. We arrive in New York City in time for lunch, Conrad decides that we should make a stop at vendor for a hot dog or something. The city is packed full of people, no matter where you look there are a pack of people like a pack of wolves circling around their dinner. I look over to Conrad as we walk down the busy sidewalks, wondering which place we are going to get food from. His expression is flat, no pain, no joy, no sadness, just nothing.
I bump Conrad's shoulder to get hi attention, he looks over to me, his eyes widen wondering what I want. "Connie? When are going to eat?" I ask rubbing my grubbing stomach. He laughs at me.
"We will stop here" He points to a small cart, steam rising from the cookers. the smell of hot dogs and burgers is almost overwhelming, but it smells delicious, my mouth starts watering. I nod and we buy two hot dogs and eat them while we walk somewhere else.
I stop shoving food in my mouth to ask Connie a question, "Where are we going now?"
He let's out a laugh before answering. "We are going to go to a museum." He smiles at me as he leads the way to our destination.
I really can't help, but love him. I smile and start to blush at my thoughts.
