Jennie stares at the ceiling of her dorm illuminated with the soft light coming from the window, listening to the birds chirping outside. She yawns, finding she can't fall back asleep although she is still fairly tired.

She smiles a little hearing the soft snoring of Yeji, the young orange-haired girl asleep on the bunk bed in the other room. Yeji seems kind and polite but gives off a vibe that many of the young rich girls Jennie went to school with. Like she could easily manipulate you and add you to her collection of marionettes to be used when she deems necessary.

She also does what Jennie likes to call the Smile with a capital S, a fake smile that woos adults and children alike, causing them to absolutely adore you and not see the dark shadow behind. The Smile is something Jennie can spot in an instant for she is an expert at it herself.

Ryujin, Yeji's best friend, is the complete opposite of Yeji, down to earth, and gives zero fucks of what others think. She proved that the minute Jennie walked through the door by looking up and giving her a small smile (with a lowercase s) and immediately asking her to play Mario Karts because Yeji was tired of it.

At least Ryujin seems to be completely transparent, but Jennie has lived in the world of the rich and greedy too long to know that someone who is best friends with a girl like Yeji and was sent away from her family for an unknown cause is enough red flags for Jennie to think there is something more to Ryujin's quite normal exterior.

No one who grows up in an environment where corrupt and greedy adults plan your entire existence to fit into their grand scheme comes out normal. They either end up tough and sassy like Lisa and Rosé, cold and smart like Jisoo, or shatter into tiny pieces that are impossible to pick up again.

Jennies last roommate, Momo, is a perfect example of the latter. Jennie used to be friends with Momo when they were little, they would play Legos on the floor together building little spaceships and castles or take trips to Japan to visit Momo's grandmother. One morning Momo disappeared and Jennie didn't see her for seven years.

Jennie later found out that Momo was shipped to boarding school in the United States, but everyone knows that one doesn't just get shipped out to the US for no reason. Most of the time it's because something is wrong with them, sometimes physically, but most of the time mentally.

But one definitely does not come back from the US sane or at least remotely happy, but somehow Momo seems to be both. When Jennie came into her dorm this morning, Momo greeted her with a huge hug and a happy smile. Jennie was, of course, thrilled to see her long-time friend, but couldn't help but be a bit weary.

Momo's smile seemed genuine, but a bit empty, and Jennie could see the pain behind the curtain of sunshine and rainbows that Momo put up ever so carefully. Jennie is, of course, worried for her close friend but also can't seem to trust Momo for the people with the happiest facade have chaotic minds.
