Chapter 34

In silence, every student, professor and parent at Hogwarts walked down to the castle grounds. It was night time now, and the only source of light was from the full moon that shone brightly over them.

The only sound they could hear was the crunching of dirt and leaves beneath their feet and the staggered breathing of everyone around them. With every exhale came a stream of white smoke that quickly disappeared.

Harry walked with his head hanging next to Hermione and Ron, with Pansy and Blaise in front of them. They were organized into rows set up by the professors, and they had the luxury (was it really?) of sitting in the first row.

"Do you think his parents will be here?" Ron asked quietly as everyone was finding their seats.

"His mother, probably. I couldn't imagine his father attending the funeral after killing him." Harry said.

"I'd expect he's on his way to Azkaban," said Hermione.

"I doubt it." Pansy said from behind them. Harry, Ron and Hermione turned to face her and Blaise. "He would have fled right after killing him. He's probably out of the country now," She looked up. "Narcissa's here."

Harry turned around and saw Narcissa standing in front of him. He stood up at once and hugged her tightly, her hugging him back. "I'm so sorry," Harry said.

Narcissa smiled. "Don't be. None of us could have known this would happen."

"You lost your son." Harry said.

Narcissa sighed. "Yes well, at least he died happy."

"How do you know he was happy?"

"Because," she said. "He was with you. I think that's really all he ever wanted."

She took the seat next to Harry's as the others started settling down. Professor McGonagall, along with Professor Wilkins and Professor Flitwick, stood at the front of the group next to Draco's ivory casket.

"Could I get everybody's attention, please?" she called out. Once it was quiet, she continued. "We are gathered here tonight to celebrate and mourn the loss of a son, friend, partner, student, but most of all a very well-rounded and passionate person.

"I'm sure you have all heard by now, but we are going to address it anyway. Draco Malfoy was killed by his father on Thursday night. His immediate family was notified and requested we hold the ceremony here, where he would be had he not been killed. This is a time of sorrow, but we ask you to all be respectful and rejoiceful, as we cannot move past this if we don't come together. Professor," she finished, gesturing for Professor Wilkins to step in.

"I was lucky enough to be able to have Draco in my class for his eighth year of school. He was truly one of the smartest students I have ever taught..."

Ron smirked and nudged Hermione. "Ha-ha, Hermione, he's getting an academic recognition and you're not." he joked.

"Ronald!" Hermione yelled in a whisper. "Stop making jokes right now! That's not funny!"

"..but I am sure when I say that Draco Malfoy died being loved by the people that meant most to him," Professor Wilkins caught Harry's eyes, which were starting to tear. "and he will always be remembered by many. Please, stand now for a moment of silence, and let us join hands in his honor."

Professors Wilkins, Flitwick and McGonagall clasped their hands together where they stood, and every other student, parent and professor stood up and held hands with the people next to them. They all bowed their heads, and as Harry did so tears dropped from his eyes into the ground. He couldn't wait for all of this to be over...

"Thank you." Professor Wilkins said. "We are now going to give anybody the opportunity to speak on behalf of Draco. Would anyone like to start?"

Narcissa stood up and walked over to Draco's casket, gently placing her hand on it and leaning down to place a kiss where his head was resting inside of it. She took a deep breath and faced everyone. "Draco...he was very important to me. Not only was he my child but he was the one thing in my life that kept me together. If it weren't for him, I would have left years ago and gone to live on my own somewhere far from here. But I stayed for him, so that he would be protected and while it has cost me a lot, I wouldn't give those days up for the world. I hope that he can be forgiven for the things he's done, and I'm very thankful that he had people there for him when he couldn't be there for himself."

She returned to her seat and everyone gave her a soft applause. A few seconds passed before the next person stood up.

"You'll be okay, Harry." Hermione reassured him as he made his way up to the casket.

"Um," he started awkwardly. "Well it may come as a shock to some of you that for the past few months Draco and I were pretty close. I know he's been a git to a lot of you but I'm asking you to forgive him, he wouldn't have wanted it like this. And if you can't do it for him, then do it for me."

Harry returned to his seat and immediately turned to hug Hermione. Pansy stood up from behind them and walked up to the front. "I'm speaking for myself and Blaise. Draco was our best friend; we knew him for as long as we can remember. Even though it doesn't seem like it, Draco was a really good friend, and we all looked out for each other. Just because he's gone now, though, doesn't mean he'll lose his place in our hearts."
