Chapter 6

I walked into the dance taking in my surroundings. There were people dancing, people just talking, a snack table and a bunch of decorations. Looking through the crowd I saw Moon, Yasmine and Sam in slutty Lakers costumes, and I made my way over. When I finally reached them Yasmine had noticed I was walking over and looked me up and down with a weird look on her face. "Hey Av. Cute outfit." Yasmine said while Moon and Sam smiled and agreed instantly. "I love your outfits too! The skirts are so cute." I replied and told them I would catch up with them later. I walked through the crowds trying to find Miguel, Eli and Demetri, but I only saw Eli and Demetri. As I started to walk over Miguel reached them and started talking.

Miguel was dressed in a skeleton outfit, Eli was dressed as a doctor and Demetri looked like a wizard. I walked up and said. "Nice costumes guys!" as they started their conversation. "Oh skeleton. Classic. Nice" Demetri started off. "Thanks I like your sorcerer costume." Miguel answered with a smile. Demetri scoffed before explaining he was a necromancer as I look over to Eli and whispered "What the hell is a necromancer? I thought he was a wizard with a trench coat." He started laughing but we turned back to the conversation as Miguel addressed us. "So are you a regular doctor and pirate or?" Eli spoke up first and said, "Plastic Surgeon. I fix lips." then I said "Actually I'm a sexy pirate. Thank you for noticing guys." Miguel just laughed and said, "Nice."

After a while I started getting hungry so I said, "Hey. I'm gonna go grab a snack, do you guys want anything?" They all said no so I turned and made my way to the snack table. As I was walking over I bumped into someone who I recognized as Kyler. "Hey Aviva. Sweet costume!" I looked at his costume and realized he was also a pirate. While laughing a little bit I said, "Sweet hair. How did it grow so quick? We should've coordinated in colors too." He laughed and responded with, "Yea its a new shampoo. I'm trying to find Sam so I'll catch you later. Yeah?" "Okay sounds like a plan. I'll be at the snack table. See ya!"

I continued walking towards the table where I saw someone wearing a sodium costume. "The silent killer I presume?" The girl turned around and said, "Yea! I like your costume. Want a cheese doodle?" "Hell yeah I do. Hand me a plate too please." She did as I asked and we talked about how we didn't really like parties. I soon realized we never actually introduced ourselves so I said, "Holy shit. I forgot. I'm Aviva!" she laughed and said, "Its all good. I'm Aisha. Friends?" I nodded as I set down my plate to get my phone out. As I went to hand her my phone so we could exchange numbers, I got a notification. I opened it and it was a video of Aisha and I at the snack table, her with a pig nose on her and mine with the name slut written on my forehead. I instantly feel my face fall as I look to Aisha who has the same expression. I looked up to see everyone laughing and talking about us and when I did Aisha ran out leaving me to deal with everyone mocking us.

I decided to go look for her but was unsuccessful. I instead felt the urge to use the restroom, not sure whether it was to pee or throw up from how much anxiety I had gotten after being humiliated all over again. I ran through the halls and found the nearest bathroom, which was the boys locker room. I ran in and was met with Miguel, Eli and Demetri who were zipping up their pants. I turned around and covered my eyes with my hand. "Woah! Sorry. I really needed a bathroom." I said as all three of them freaked out. "Holy shit Aviva!" Miguel started off. "Jesus Christ! A warning would've been great." Demetri continued and finally Eli spoke up, "Av, you shouldn't be in here." I responded while turning around, trying to be as calm as possible. "Sorry. I just wanted to find a bathroom. I wasn't- I mean- I needed-" I started rubbing my hands together to get me to calm down so I could speak normally. "Never mind. Just forget it. Sorry for barging in. I just wanted to use the bathroom." I said slowly.

"Hey. What's wrong?" Miguel said as he noticed how anxious I was acting. "What? Oh, um. I don't know if you guys saw it yet but here." I said while handing Miguel my phone that had the video pulled up. Miguel sighed and handed it to Demetri who then handed it to Eli. "Shit. Av, It's not true. The kid who posted this probably doesn't even know you that well." "Yeah Aviva, the kids here are assholes. Just ignore them." Demetri said, being genuine for the first time. I just nodded and went to stand by the mirror as the door opened. Kyler, Brucks and their friends just walked in and were talking about giving Sam some bracelet like he did another girl. I looked over to see the three boys I was just talking to over by the wall, eavesdropping. I went to walk over but tripped on some lacrosse sticks, which knocked them over. "Oh shit!" one of Kyler's friends said as Eli and Demetri ran out, leaving Miguel and I with Kyler and his posse.

Miguel steps in front of me as they approach us, "You better watch out 'Rhea. That bum is not here to save you this time." Kyler speaks up, which opened my eyes to how much of a bully he was, but of course Miguel had to respond. "He's not a bum. He's my sensei." "Miguel. Stop talking before they get irritated." I whispered to him, but Kyler spoke over me. "Watch out guys. 'Rhea knows karate now!" He then started to mockingly make karate noises and do moves with his buddies. Miguel, fed up with this, then kicks Kyler into the wall which initiates a fight. This ends with Kyler's friends grabbing Miguel and leading him into the back of the locker room, while I stand there not knowing how to help. But when Kyler starts to close the gate I grabbed it and yanked it back open, surprising Kyler. He grabs me by the shoulders and puts me against the wall. With that one movement, it triggered something that I hadn't thought about in a while.

I instantly flashed back to one of the worsts fights I had with my parents and, out of instinct, I flinched. Opening my eyes, a tear went down my cheek, causing Kyler to instantly let go of me. I then slid down the wall as he grabbed a lacrosse stick and closed the gate. "You're a dead man." He yelled as Miguel shouted, "Please! No, no, no!" I could hear the lacrosse stick meeting with his body, over and over again before I covered my ears and squeezed my eyes shut. I knew they had finished hitting him when they walked past me laughing and gloating about what they had done. I slowly uncovered my eyes and crawled over to Miguel, not having the strength in my body to walk. I turned around, as I heard someone walk in, and saw the blonde man who got arrested my first night here. I met his eyes before he slowly looked over and saw Miguel, laying unconscious and bloody.

He walked over and picked him up, carrying him out the door, but not before turning around and saying something to me. "Let's go. I'm gonna need your help. I'll give you a lift home after we bring him home." I nodded and followed him while he spoke up again. "I'm Miguel's sensei. Johnny, Johnny Lawrence."
