Chapter Three.
The halls echoed with the sound of adolescent joy as Flora Fairchild and her brother, Miles, ran through the house laughing and shouting. Flora trailed behind the boy, trying her best to keep up with him. She was overjoyed that he was home. She figured he had been quite busy at school because he had barely been responding to her letters and drawings she sent. Miles was happy to be home as well. His sister was the most important person in his life. He would do anything to protect her. Knowing that (Y/N) and Kate were now here to keep Flora company put him at ease. He can't always be the strong one.
"Miles! You're too fast for me." Flora whines, chasing after him. She runs around the corner and bumps straight into (Y/N) who has changed out of her nightgown and is now wearing a denim skirt and a white top.
"Sorry, Flora! Are you alright?" She asks, politely. Flora nods before continuing on with her chase leaving (Y/N) to smile and walk over to her mother.
"Good morning, Mrs Grose. Hi mom." She takes a seat besides Kate on a burnt orange sofa. The three overhear the kids running through the house and Mrs Grose decides it is time to put an end to the ruckus.
"Miles! Flora! Come eat breakfast." She raises her voice but doesn't dare yell at the children. They enter the room, hand in hand, and take their seats across from (Y/N) and Kate. Miles changed out of his outfit from last night and is now wearing a handsome dark red sweater. (Y/N) furrows her brows as she realizes there is a moderate sized hole on the shoulder. From what she's seen, the children are always dressed neatly so it seems out of place that the boy's sweater would be torn. She shrugs it off and turns to her mother.
"How was your sleep?" She asks, careful not to be disruptful.
"It was alright. Yours?" Kate asks in return. Miles looks up from his plate of pancakes and attentively stares at (Y/N).
"It was good!" She lies. Miles chuckles and stabs his food to which Mrs Grose clears her throat.
"I forgot! Kate, (Y/N), you need to meet Miles." Flora's eyes widen.
"We've met." The young mom states.
"I'm really sorry about last night. I didn't mean to be rude or anything. Sorry if I scared you." He says, seeming genuine.
"And I'm sorry to you too." He stutters to (Y/N) who just smiles, sweetly. Kate shrugs off his apology and smiles as well. She is here to take care of them and she will do exactly that. She can deal with a moody teenager, she already has one.
"Cool. So, (Y/N) you're a sleepwalker like Flora." Miles says. Kate looks at (Y/N) with confusion, having just been told that her daughter had a restful sleep.
"I don't sleepwalk!" Flora stares at Miles. He chuckles.
"How would you know, silly? You're asleep the whole time." His voice becomes higher. (Y/N) and her mother smile at each other. (Y/N) had always wanted a sibling but her mother was single and even if she wasn't, they didn't have enough money nor time to take care of another child.
"That's a cool sweater." The young girl says, pointing at Miles' sweatshirt.
"Thanks." Miles looks down, all of a sudden unable to make eye contact with (Y/N). Flora looks back up from her food.
"You shouldn't be wearing that." Flora warns. Mrs Grose stands up and starts to pour the girl some more juice.
"He wanted me to have it." Miles states, rubbing the material between his fingers.
"Was it your dad's?" Kate asks, cocking her head to the side. Miles pauses.
"It was Quint's." He nods. Kate looks to (Y/N) who is just as confused as her.
"Who's Quint?" She asks.
"He was the riding instructor." Mrs Grose chimes in, filling up a glass of juice for (Y/N).
"He managed the estate. He was the best." Miles corrects the elderly woman.
"He's not here anymore?" The teenage girl asks, reaching for the glass and thanking Mrs Grose with her facial expressions. Miles' face drops and he takes a breath.
"He died."
"Oh." Kate and her daughter say in sync. A heaviness falls over the room.
"Everyone dies, Miles." Flora says in a mocking tone. Miles looks down at his feet. (Y/N) shifts uncomfortably. A phone rings and Flora darts to answer it.
"I'll get it, don't worry everyone!" She shouts, her hair flowing behind her. Flora picks up the phone and greets whoever is on the other end. Mrs Grose keeps her eyes on the girl.
"Hey! It's the headmaster of Miles' school. He would like to speak to whoever's in charge." She proudly beams. Kate looks over to Mrs Grose but the elderly lady nods to Kate.
"Yes, go ahead." She speaks. Kate awkwardly stands and fixes her dress. She walks to the phone and holds it up to her ear.
"Hello, this is Kate." She says with a plastered on smile. Soon enough, her face begins to drop. Miles peers over the couch at the women, his face silently begging for an answer.
"Miles, are you okay?" (Y/N) whispers to the boy.
"Yes." He replies, unfocused. Kate hangs up the phone and walks toward the sofa, more aggressive than she normally is.
"What did he want?" (Y/N) asks her mother, glancing back at Miles.
"He, um- He gave me a list of your schoolwork to do while you're home." Kate replies, blankly.
"Okay. That sounds fun." Miles jokes to which (Y/N) giggles and Kate gives her the side eye. Without notice, Miles stands up and begins walking past the ladies and to his room. Kate turns her body and looks at Miles.
"Where are you going?" She asks.
"Uh, to my room." He answers.
"What about your plate?" She responds, her face growing less patient. (Y/N) had already started clearing hers.
"What?" Miles says, visibly confused.
"Are you going to take your plate to the kitchen?" Repeating herself once again. Mrs Grose stands and grabs the plate from (Y/N)'s hands. (Y/N) looks at Mrs Grose with confusion but smiles nervously and takes her seat. Miles pauses before chuckling.
"Do you want me to cut the grass too?" He jokes. The teenage girl looks up at Miles with disappointment.
"No. But Mrs Grose prepared a beautiful breakfast for us and it would be the polite thing to do." Kate doesn't break eye contact with Miles.
"But it's her job, right?" He talks back.
"Miles-" (Y/N) starts before Mrs Grose cuts her off.
"It's fine, Miles. I'll do it, darling. You go on ahead." She smiles.
"Come on, Flora." He calls. Flora gets up to her feet and reaches for her plate. (Y/N) smiles and nods at Flora.
"Let's go. Not your job either, Flora." Miles says while walking away. Flora listens to her brother and scurries away. As they exit, Kate unnoticeably rolls her eyes. (Y/N) sighs.
"They were born into privilege, Kate. Can you please remember that? (Y/N), why don't you go join them." (Y/N) nods and picks up her plate before remembering that Mrs Grose wouldn't approve of that. She plays it off by dusting off her skirt and walks toward Miles' bedroom.
"Miles was expelled. He attacked another student. Apparently he was found by a teacher slamming another boy's head into the bathroom tile." Kate says once it's just her and Mrs Grose. Mrs Grose places her hands on her hips.
"Oh absolutely not. No. He wouldn't do that."
"He did. And it sounds like he's very lucky that the other boy's family isn't pressing charges."
"Yes, well other boy's, Kate, have always been jealous of Miles."
