Chapter Five.

Days at the Fairchild residence seemed to pass slower than anywhere else. The sky wasn't a bright blue like it would be gazing upon any other pond; it was always a dull gray. Kate took note of this and questioned the legistics of it.

There must be an explanation.

But she kept to herself for the fear of seeming crazy like her mother. (Y/N) was less observant than her mother and was mainly focused on her schooling throughout the days, and sneaking to Miles' room when the moon was out. It turns out that Miles and (Y/N)'s sleep schedules were quite similar. This became one of the main factors that helped their friendship grow. Though the young girl was enjoying having someone her age to spend her time with, Kate was less pleased. From the first day they met, she had had a dreadful feeling about Miles. With Flora, she felt a warm presence surrounding her. The girl was bright, bubbly, and charming despite her sometimes gloomy words about the circle of life. With Miles, Kate felt as if all the laughter had left the estate. She couldn't seem to get how her own daughter spent her nights up giggling with him.

"Miles?" (Y/N) asked, breaking the silence of the two as they lay on the hard wood floor, side by side, staring up at the ceiling.

"Yes?" His voice husky from sleepless nights and yelling with Flora.

"Do you enjoy my company?" She asked with a sudden look of concern upon her face.

"Yes, (Y/N). Why would you ask that?" Miles replies.

"I don't know. Sometimes I just feel like a bother. I know Flora enjoys playing with me and Mrs Grose likes me even the slightest bit but... I'm not sure about my mother or you. With my mother, we were always so close... until we moved in here. She's changed." The girl stutters, unable to control the hurt that lingers in her chest.

"She just needs some time to get used to the new house. Moving is a big deal. I wouldn't take it personally." He speaks, facing his head toward (Y/N).

"But do you like me?" She asks still facing straight up.

"Why do you care?" Miles raises his brow.

"Because we're friends, Miles. Friends need to like each other." (Y/N) states.

"You're right, and I do like you. Don't fret." He subtly smirks. (Y/N) turns her head to view Miles' face. Her eyes flutter from his messy curls to his captivating eyes. She bites her lip to conceal her blooming smile. Though Miles wasn't the typical boy (Y/N) usually fell for, she found herself wondering what it would be like to be with him. How his full lips would feel against hers. She was almost positive she was just lonely and searching for the closest boy to hook up with. She was a teenager after all.

"What are you thinking about?" Miles asks, noticing the sultry look on (Y/N)'s face. Her eyes widen and her smirk drops.

"Nothing- I don't know. Sorry." Her face becoming red.

"I'm guessing you're not as innocent as you seem." He snickers.

"I don't know what you're talking about." (Y/N) says while sitting up and sitting crossed legged. Miles leans on his elbows.

"I bet it's all an act; your whole persona. You've probably done way more than you'll admit." He snyly smiles.

"You're wrong. I... I can't believe we're talking about this. I haven't done anything, really. Just the normal teenage stuff but nothing crazy." She makes it very clear that his impression of her is very wrong. Miles stares at her through his eyebrows.

"So, you're a virgin?"

"Yes, but I have done some stuff. Okay, this conversation has taken a turn. Anyway..."

"No, it's just getting interesting. But if you're uncomfortable, we can talk about something else." He lowers his voice, almost in a comforting way. (Y/N) glances up at Miles, his stare causing her heart to race.

"Are you a virgin?" She works up the nerve to ask.

"What do you think?" He says before biting his lip, curiously.

"Well... uh..." (Y/N) struggles to answer his question.

He seems so confident about this kind of thing but also... he doesn't have any friends. Huh.

"Having trouble deciding, princess?" He teases, tapping his fingers against the floor, rhythmically.

"No. I just don't think it matters that much. Let's change the subject." (Y/N) decides.

"Alright. What do you wanna do or talk about?" Miles' voice becomes playful.

"Don't get me wrong: I love our late night talks about essentially nothing but do you think we could do something? Like maybe go somewhere? My mother has been so busy teaching Flora that we haven't left the house in a while." (Y/N) says, hoping Miles will take the hint that she is eager to go on an adventure.

"You want to go somewhere? Right now?" He asks, sitting up more.

"Well, you're already dressed to go out." She chuckles, gesturing to his casual but definitely not nighttime attire.

"Sure. Let's go." Miles says while standing up and reaching out his hand to (Y/N).

"Where?" She asks, accepting his hand and feeling the tension build almost immediately.

"Anywhere is better than this creepy house in the middle of the night. Come on, but be quiet. We can't wake up Flora. She'll be a mess tomorrow." Miles warns, reaching for the doorknob and twisting it, carefully.

"Okay. Got it." She says, releasing her hand from Miles' and following closely after him. As they leave his room, he raises his finger to his lips and lets out a soft shush. (Y/N) shyly smiles. They pass by Flora's bedroom, (Y/N)'s room, the east corridor, the study room, and the main entrance. Just as the pair reach the large front door, they hear a creak from a floorboard behind them. (Y/N) stands frozen in her place but Miles briskly turns around. He is met with Kate Mandell's strict face just inches from his.

"What on earth do you two think you're doing?" Kate snaps. (Y/N) regretfully spins around to face her unpleased mother.

"I just wanted some fresh air, Mom." She nervously grimaces.

"You have a window in your bedroom for that reason. I know you two spend hours in Miles' room at night doing God knows what. But there is no way in hell that I am letting my sixteen year old daughter sneak off in the middle of the night and leave the premises." The young mom shakes her head which is filled with angry thoughts toward the boy.

"We weren't going to leave, Kate. We were just going to the coy pond. For air? You need to calm down." Miles speaks, condescendingly. Kate cocks her head with annoyance.

"(Y/N), off to bed. I don't care if you aren't ready to sleep. You will take your melatonin and lay in bed until you drift off. Go. Now." Kate spits out. (Y/N) takes one last look at Miles before speedily tiptoeing back to her room. As her head fell against her pillow, which was much too flat for her liking, she anxiously awaited what the outcome of her behaviour would be. (Y/N) had never had her mother be this cross with her. She had never given her a reason to be. This house seemed to be changing people.
