Chapter Six.
Kate prided herself on remaining calm in frustrating situations. Her own mother was at times unresponsive and she had learned to deal with every unfortunate inconvenience with patience. Her daughter had always been a good kid; never sneaking off, slacking in school, or running around with boys. Miles Fairchild was a bad influence and Kate trusted her gut. That is why she decided to limit the kids' time together. She knew, or thought she knew, what was best for (Y/N).
It was early on a Tuesday morning, after the night of the two being busted, when (Y/N) heard rapid knocking on her door. She kept her door locked at all times like Miles instructed. She figured he knew more about the house than her mother who never let her lock it previously. (Y/N) sprung out of bed and ran to the door. She hesitated before unlocking and opening the door. Kate strutted into the room and closed the door behind her.
"Good morning." She spoke with a blank expression.
"Good morning. I'm really sorry about last night. I truly just wanted some fresh air." The girl tried to reason.
"Don't try that. Just don't lie to me, (Y/N). I'm not mad, just worried. I want you to be safe and that boy doesn't give off good vibes. I don't want you guys seeing each other anymore." Kate said.
"What do you mean? We live together. Of course we're going to see each other." (Y/N) said with confusion.
"Yes, I know. I don't want you two hanging out in the middle of the night. No alone time in his room, or yours for that matter. If you guys are playing with Flora, it's fine." She spoke back.
"Mom, that is totally unfair. You're saying we can't have any privacy?" (Y/N) bit her lip after she spoke, realizing how her mother would take the statement.
"Privacy? Why would you need privacy?" Kate clenched her jaw.
"I misspoke. Sorry." (Y/N) answered, coldly. The young mom took a second to evaluate the situation. Her eyes drifted to the curtains on the window and back to her daughter.
"No more seeing each other like that, okay? I love you and I want what's best for you. Now, come down for breakfast." She said before tossing her hair over her shoulder and exiting the room. (Y/N) stood in shock as she watched her mom leave.
"How are we supposed to eat breakfast together?" She scoffed to herself. As she was getting dressed, (Y/N) could hear Miles and Flora laughing and quietly yelling while playing. Then she heard her mothers heels walking up to them and stopping. (Y/N) assumed her mother took Miles out of the room to talk because now she only heard Flora trying to get Mrs Grose's attention. The girl walked out of her bedroom and down to the dining area where Flora was waiting for her.
"(Y/N)! How did you sleep? Was it perfectly splendid?" She says in a fake british accent, making (Y/N) giggle.
"It was alright. How was yours?" She smiles. Mrs Grose hurriedly leaves the room to fetch the food.
"Fantastic!"
"Where did Miles go?" (Y/N) asks.
"I think he's with your mom. I don't know why. Do you?" Flora tilts her head.
"Uh- no. I don't." (Y/N) stutters. Flora shrugs and Mrs Grose enters the room with large plates of breakfast.
"Here you are my dear. And here, (Y/N). Eat up." She nods. (Y/N) lifts her head up and looks around for Kate and Miles but they are nowhere to be seen. She decides to start eating and worry about them after. Within minutes, Miles and Kate are entering the room. Miles' face looks vexed. Meanwhile, Miss Kate looks quite pleased with herself.
"Miles! I'm almost done so make sure you eat fast so we can play!" Flora yells while Mrs Grose hands Miles his plate. He accepts it without a 'thank you' and sits down across from (Y/N). (Y/N)'s eyes are glued to him but he won't look back. He looks everywhere except for the girl. This causes (Y/N)'s face to fall into a frown. Kate looks up at her daughter and though seeing her upset hurts her heart, she feels a sense of relief.
TIMESKIP.
Flora throws her hands in the air as she jumps off of her bed and into (Y/N)'s arms. (Y/N) catches the girl and lets out a snort for a laugh.
"Again! Again!" Flora shouts with excitement.
"Alright, but then it's time to tuck you into bed. First we'll have to fix your bed up though." She laughs, examining the bed with the covers in a ball. Flora jumps once more and screams before she's in (Y/N)'s tight embrace. The two spend a few minutes making up the young girl's bed and tucking her in.
"Goodnight, (Y/N). Thanks for putting me to bed tonight. You're way funner than Kate." She smiles.
"Thanks Flora. Have a wonderful sleep." She plants a kiss on her forehead as Flora yawns. (Y/N) tiptoes to the door and turns the light off. She pulls the door closed from the outside and turns around. A gasp escapes her mouth as she sees Miles standing directly in front of her. Their noses practically touching.
"(Y/N)." He says.
"Miles, we're going to get in so much trouble. I have to go." She stammers.
"Meet me in the basement tonight."
"You know we can't."
"Kate hates the basement. She won't go down there. She'll never know as long as you stay silent tonight. How about 3:00am?" Miles whispers on her neck.
"Okay. Only this once. My mom has never been this mad at me before."
"We'll see. Now go to your room. See you tonight." His breath tickling (Y/N)'s neck again.
"Y- yea. See you tonight." She says, anxiously. (Y/N) watched as Miles walked straight down the hall and into his room, winking as he turned the corner and shut the door. She felt her cheeks warm up and she held up her hand to her face. She couldn't wait for the early hours of the morning when they were going to meet. (Y/N) wasn't going to be controlled by her mother.
