Chapter Nine.
Miles Fairchild hadn't shared this many smiles since before his parents and Quint passed. Sneaking off with (Y/N) occupied his alone hours and he couldn't be more pleased with the action he was getting. Kate wasn't even smart enough to check her own daughter's room at night. Maybe it was about how bright she was or maybe she just placed too much trust in her daughter. (Y/N) enjoyed the rush of their concealed relationship. She always told her mom about any gossip that involved boys so this was quite a new thing for her. (Y/N) was still getting used to the actually wanted attention from the boy as she had only ever received looks and compliments from disgusting boys at her school who she had absolutely no interest in. Miles was like a piece of Heaven... or maybe Hell but for now, (Y/N) was trying to just see the good parts of him. This included the pleasure he brought each time they would meet up, though she wasn't just interested in the physical stuff. His mouth wandered down (Y/N)'s body as he placed soft kisses, trailing down her stomach. She sighed and gazed up at the ceiling of the basement, amazed as to how it had not collapsed yet given its current condition.
"What's wrong? Not in the mood for anything?" Miles asked, tilting his head up to face (Y/N).
"Oh, nothing's wrong." She assured him with a fake smile.
"But you're not in the mood?" He continued.
"No, I guess not. Can we just talk?" (Y/N) asked.
"Uh, sure. About what?" He said, placing his body down next to hers, hoping to get back to the 'fun stuff'.
"Anything really. Let's just have a deep conversation. Those are always fun at 4:00am. What's your deepest darkest fear? Or your life goal? Or... I don't know." She giggled as she pondered over the possibilities.
"Deep conversations can be fun... or depressing." He stated, moving hands to lay clasped on his stomach. (Y/N) turned to him and examined his features. She could never get tired of laying next to the boy even in silence. He was too interesting to look at. Every time she focused on his face, she could spot a new freckle she had never noticed, or a curl that fell differently from the rest. She wondered if he ever noticed the small things about her, which of course, he did but didn't like to admit. He loved the way (Y/N)'s lips parted slightly when the two would make eye contact in a room full of people, or how her hair part was never exactly the same after she'd shower. (Y/N) had no clue how often she was on Miles' mind.
"True." She raised her eyebrows.
"Well, what's your deepest darkest fear?" Miles asked, leaning on his side.
"Um... death. Yea, probably death. What happens to us? Where do we go? Do you believe in reincarnation? My grandmother always swore her cat came back as a bird and followed her around. She's kinda out of it though so maybe that was the beginning of it.. anyway, death freaks me out a lot." She said, using her eyes to express every emotion that raced through her head as she thought deeply.
"When you've seen as much death as me, it won't freak you out. You might become numb to it." He spoke with a blank expression. (Y/N) started to speak but realized she probably shouldn't have gone there.
"Sorry Miles... I shouldn't have brought that up. You've experienced so much at such a young age, no wonder you've become numb to it. I wish we could change places." She bit her lip and exhaled.
"No you don't and I'd never want you to go through that. Death is your biggest fear and it's not mine, so it's better this way. Okay, my turn. My biggest fear is probably... uh... I guess losing the people I love? I guess that kind of ties in with the idea of death but I'm not scared of death itself, you know? I would never want to lose Flora but I understand that one day she'll pass away. I'll be gone by then too. So will you, and Kate will be long gone. It's just the circle of life. I hate the idea of losing people too early though. Like if Kate decided it was best for you guys to pack up and leave all of a sudden, which is a possibility. Your mom seems kinda unpredictable." Miles' eyes wandered around the room and followed the pipes as he spoke.
"Yea... but no. My mom is fine, she's just trying to be strict and she's never had to before. She's not crazy or anything, I assure you." (Y/N) sat up and said directly to him.
"Okay. Whatever you say." Miles said, smacking his lips together. (Y/N) laid back down and scrunched up her nose as she fiddled with the buttons on her shirt. Miles' head turned over fast to see what she was doing and was disappointed when he saw that she was just fidgeting and not undressing for him. The girl noticed his dissatisfaction and turned her head the other way to think more clearly. She took a deep breath and spoke.
"Can we talk about us, Miles? I enjoy making out with you and stuff but... what is this? Is it anything more than a hookup?" She asked letting her voice take on a more serious tone. Miles chuckled and then looked in (Y/N)'s eyes.
"Shit, you're serious?" He asked.
"Yes. Why wouldn't I be?" She replied, her temper rising with annoyance.
"I don't know, just- we just met each other like a month ago. Can't we just have fun?" Miles said.
"So, you're only interested in using me for sex because you're too horny to deal with your hormones by yourself? You don't care about me as a person? I've learned to like you over this past... almost two months." Her voice peaked as she struggled to keep her cool.
"(Y/N), you're totally overreacting. Yea, I care about you, I guess, but-"
"But what? You know what, Miles? I'm tired. I'm gonna go to bed." She said as she lifted herself up from the ground and picked up her slippers, walking away without turning back to him.
"Don't be like this. (Y/N)?" Miles spat and gritted his teeth as his eyes followed (Y/N), well (Y/N)'s ass, leaving the room. He pressed his face into his hands and groaned when he heard the door at the top of the stairs close. Miles had a point, they had just recently met but (Y/N) craved a stronger relationship and bond than just physical attraction. Her mood was quite up and down the last few days but Miles didn't think that was any excuse to talk to him that way. He thought he should've been the one to kick her out, not her leave by her own will. Miles ran his hand through his hair and clenched his jaw.
"Stupid girl." He uttered.
