You picked at some dirt that had gotten stuck on the bottom of your dirty brown boot. Well, you wouldn't call it dirt. You would instead call it a collection of brown must that has gathered underneath the your shoe in a day.
Not too exciting.
"Hey mom!" A little girl piped up. You looked up, bags evident under your eyes.
"I told you to stop calling me that," you mumbled, tying your muddy shoelaces together. The tiny girl giggled, playing with a pink ribbon that was intertwined in her somewhat perfect hair as she sat down next to you.
"Nope! You're my mom and that be that!" She replied in her light british accent. You gave her a half smile, ruffling her hair. She whined in protest before fixing it.
"Is Coal almost home from his expedition?" You asked. She nodded.
"Yeah! He sent me home to you!" The little girl replied. You sighed, standing up and fixing your black tank top that had faded to a light gray.
"Thanks Ribbon. I have to get going now," you announced. She frowned as you climbed up the ladder and to the hatchway of your small shelter. "Take care of everyone now."
You opened the large door and into the real world. Ribbon sighed, turning back to the five other kids. "Alright, let's surprise Coal and tidy up this place!"
You emerged into the barren wasteland of your city. It used to be a thriving, lively place. Building lights lit up the night sky while people came to be merry. Now it was nothing but a ghost town with piles of dry dirt and dust galore.
You walked over to the rain barrels, checking for water. There was a little, but not enough for everyone. You or Coal would have to miss out on it, and you had an idea on who it was going to be.
You trudged your sluggish body to a large, abandoned building. It wasn't anything new to you, but it was always an adventure to go inside. You entered, looking around.
It has been years since this building was in use, your father once working in this place. You ran your hand along the front desk before wiping off the dirt on your tattered jeans. "Gross."
Venturing off into this new, dystopian world was quite alright with you, but the one thing you had to look out for were stray animals. They didn't seem harmless until you found yourself working in a facility for them, being treated as a slave and forever condemned to work for the upper class.
For all you know, the grown-ups seemed to have been wiped out, leaving everyone under age eighteen free to roam this earth. However, this wasn't paradise in the slightest way.
Children that were captured or kidnapped were held captive and to be pets for the beings, giving them everything they desired.
You shuddered at the thought of giving up everything you love and cherished. You wanted to crush them all for one sole purpose: to get back your sister.
When this invasion started, your sister at the age of eight was taken away, never to be seen by you again. It's been three years since, and you were still hellbent on finding your way back to her and to keep her by your side.
You traveled upstairs by the run-down escalator, walking up to the first floor to check out the kitchen. Maybe there's fresh produce or something to feed everyone in there.
Climbing over the counter, you wandered into the kitchen and started scavenging for supplies. You knew that there should be something here, since you had been keeping yourself and Coal from ever going in here until today.
