Aurelia's Pov:
As I flutter my eyes open I notice my best friend Katerina Petrova pacing around my room. Even though our homes are tiny shacks, Mother made sure to make space for bedrooms. "What seems to be troubling you, Rin?" As I get a better view of her, I notice she's packing a bag of my belongings. "We don't have enough time." She mutters as she closes the bag. "Come along, Lia."
My best friend ushers me out of my bed of hay. "I'm not blindly following you out into the late hours of the night." I sit up from my bed. "Not when those monstrous things are out there." The town has been invaded with night stalkers. "Lia, people are after me, and they'll be after you as well for just being acquainted with me."
Boy, did this woman always seem to find trouble. "I cannot fathom leaving my parents to find an empty bed in the morning." It would break my mother's heart. "You can write to them, Aurelia." She pulls out my coat. "Leaving a note is better than killing your family." Her words got the best of me. "Fine." I pull on my coat and follow behind her. "Now that I'm following you, I believe you owe me a better explanation of your predicament."
As I speak, I glance up at the morning sky. It couldn't be no earlier than 6, given that the sun has barely peaked through. "A group of villagers." She states as she moves the light in front of her. "What Villagers? Everyone is so pleasant." Besides Gertrude who lives next door to us. "They don't typically accept my kind." I look at her with confusion. "You mean people from Bulgaria?"
She laughs as if I just told her a joke. "You are so innocent, little one." Katerina places a hand on my cheek for a moment. "You still-" Before I can question her antics, What once was a dim forest, is now lit up by a dozen lanterns. "What direction should we be heading in?" An unpleasant voice asks. "I heard something in that direction." A man points his lantern in our direction. "So are you going to inform me of who those men are, or still keep me in the dark?"
She looks back at me with fear in her eyes. "Run." She demands. "I'll hold them off." Once I glance back at the herd of villagers, I know it's far more than what she could handle. "I'm not leaving you behind." She sighs heavily. "You don't always have to protect me, Aurelia." Katerina isn't going to give up. "Be careful, Rin." These villagers are going to attack whether I continue to argue with her or not. "Meet me at the black gate by the sunflower bed." I nod before running away from the scene.
After a few minutes of running, I can feel my chest tightening. With a mix of fear, and heavy cardio, I'm not surprised by my state. Maybe I can rest for a moment. As I lean on a tree for support, I hear a sickening snarl from behind me. Instantly I regret making a pitstop. When I turn around to face the person, they stab me in the stomach with a wooden stake. I scream in pain as I fall to the ground.
The man starts to run away, but is stopped by Katerina. She snaps the man's neck without hesitation. As she walks closer to me, I can see dark veins growing underneath her eyes, "Lia." She rushes to my side. "Stay with me, Little one." My eyes grow heavy as the blood continues to pour out. "Aurelia wake up."
