Cassandra's pov:

I lean against my locker reading a copy of 'The Great Gatsby', my favorite book. I look up in between pages for my friends to show up, Elena Gilbert, Aurelia Grey, Caroline Forbes and my best friend Bonnie Bennett. I smile as I hear their voices boom through the halls as they come through the doors. When they reach my locker Caroline grabs my book out of my hands and shuts the book. "The Great Gatsby, really? Do you ever read anything interesting." She jokes, shoving me lightly. I take the book back from her hands. "This is interesting and you would know if you actually read anything other than teen magazines." I shoot back. "Hey, come on guys, it's a new year! We're sophomores now! Lighten up." Bonnie nudges us both. "Hey, she's hating on Gatsby." I say in defense. Aurelia rolls her eyes, "You always fall for a fictional character, then Caroline makes fun of them. It's an endless cycle. Every. New. Book. You. Get." She emphasises. "Shut up." I groan putting my book in my bag, The Great Gatsby is one of a few books I can continuously read without getting tired of it. An old friend gifted me a copy. "Someone's got a stalker." Caroline says gesturing in Matt's direction and we all glance back to Elena. She gives him a sympathetic wave. He turns away from her without waving back, ignoring her.  Matt has pretty much given her the cold shoulder since the break up. She leans her head against the locker as she turns back to us. "He hates me." She sighs, and we all shake our heads in disagreement while Caroline rolls her eyes. Jealousy. She sees Elena as the 'it girl'. "That isn't hate Elena, he's upset because you dumped him. Though he's still there for you if you need a friend." Bonnie explains the obvious. The warning bell rings, "We should get to class." Aurelia warns. "As if you're going to be early to class anyway." Caroline says before running off. "She's not wrong." I shrug as I link arms with Elena. "We, on the other hand, have to be punctual." Aurelia laughs a bit. "Whatever, I'll get to class...eventually." She states. "See you all at lunch?" Bonnie asks. "Of course." Elena smiles before pulling me down the hall with her.

We take our seats next to each other, I watch as the teacher writes his name in chalk on the board. "Mr. Tanner." He writes in cursive. The final bell rings and he turns to us introducing himself. "I'm Mr. Tanner, and I will be your history teacher for this school year. Please, take your seats while I take roll call." He goes down the list of names calling each student one by one. I look around the room to match students' names with their faces. I tune him out when he calls on Elena and Matt considering I already know them. "If I missed your name, you're probably in the wrong class and I will write you a pass to the office to fix your schedule." I say here when he gets to my name as I take out a notebook for class. "Sorry I'm late, I'm new here and got a bit turned around after getting my class schedule." I listen as the familiar voice speaks. I frown trying to pinpoint where I've heard it from before. "And you are?" Mr. Tanner asks at the same time as Elena who grabs my attention asking who the new boy is. I turn to his direction. "Stefan Salvatore." He answers. He's a memory I've tried to black out, not because of him, but because what we did to city upon city with one another. I freeze once I hear his name not answering Elena. She leans back into her seat once she realizes I'm not going to answer. He looks at me and a smile spreads across his face. "Cassandra, nice to see a familiar face here." He states hanging his bookbag in his chair and sits beside me. I turn to him and whisper. "What are you doing here?" I ask frantically and to be honest a little puzzled. "I live here, what do you mean? Mystic Falls is my home. What are you doing here?" He asks. "I-" I pause for a second trying to find the right words. "I moved here after we went our separate ways." I explain before turning back to the teacher giving him my attention.
