Sauron glanced down at his new creation, the thing to allow him not only to rule all Middle Earth, but every time and every place that had ever existed. He could even choose which people to take from the time they came from! All he had to do was tinker with it for a bit, and then, well, shazam!
Saruman held the small clock for Sauron to inspect. He looked nervous, as Sauron rightly observed, and had a good reason for feeling that way. If Sauron believed the creation wasn't good enough, he would destroy it.
But destroying the black clock with the golden hands and magic blasting out of it was not on Sauron's bucket list. In fact, he quite liked the clock.
"You have done well, Saruman," Sauron said, in his deep, rumbly voice. "This clock, this invention, might just be the key to our sucess; in little time, I shall rule every dimension, period, place, and time. All thanks to this object."
Saruman bowed. His long white beard came with him. "Thank you, my lord," he said to Sauron. "Myself and some friends have spent much time on that particular creation, and I am glad to hear how great it had seemed to come out. You are right—you shall rule everything in the world."
Sauron couldn't exactly smile, but he felt like he was. And it wasn't a happy smile.
"That is wonderful," he said, though he was secretly wondering which friends Saruman used to help him put together the object—the Blitz, as they called it. He wondered how they had created it—and what every little ounce of magic inside it did. He wondered what the true extent of the powers of that simple object was—was it exactly what he had asked from his servants? Or had they tweaked it, to make sure it came out differently?
He gave Saruman a look. Saruman knew that it meant he needed to make it work. Smiling, he picked it up and closed his eyes, letting the magic flow through time. But the object began to buzz, and both Saruman and Sauron felt themselves shaking.
At first Sauron thought this was part of what the object was supposed to do. But he felt time slipping by, faster and faster, and a cold reality sweeped in.
Oh no, Sauron thought. This is certainly not part of the plan.
