Kaia yawned, stretching up and out of bed. That's when she noticed she wasn't in bed, and Jaz, Larry and Cari were nowhere in sight. In fact, she was tied up to a tree, and a group of very strange looking people were watching her.
The presumed leader of the little gang looked quite old. He had a white beard and half-moon glasses; he also held some kind of stick in his hand. Kaia frowned. He honestly thought a stick would be a good fighting weapon? Then, with a start, she noticed everyone else (well, except her, obviously), carried a stick, differing only slightly.
Kaia desperately tried to keep her mouth shut. These people were probably enemies of some sort, not that Kaia couldn't kill them easily—but you had to beware of enemies—enemies were bad. In case anyone didn't know. And plus, angering enemies would do no good.
"Why are you carrying sticks?" Kaia asked, trying to sound calm. If she couldn't shut her mouth, sounding calm would be the next goal. "I don't want to sound rude or anything, but sticks aren't very good fighting weapons."
A greasy-haired man next to the old leader whipped around, faced Kaia, and sneered. "Silly little girl," he said, sounding as if he was spitting the words out, "when did you come from, and how dumb are you? These are wands, not sticks." He glared at her.
Kaia shrugged. "Wands, sticks, same thing, as Jasmine would say," she said. She sized him up. "You don't look too difficult to kill."
The man growled, looking as if he was going to pull out a gun from his pocket and shoot her. But he didn't, as an old woman held him back. (Why were there so many old people here? Was this old people's club or something? Did Larry's grandmother want revenge?)
The man with the white beard smiled kindly at her, and it oddly made Kaia want to attack him. He was most likely trying to befriend her, and then, after accidentally taking something precious, or something along those lines, he would betray her in some shape or form. It was just life.
Before he could speak, though, the greasy-haired man huffed. "Well, stupid girl, you didn't answer my question. When did you come from?" He glared at her again.
"When?" Kaia echoed. "What do you mean, when? I'm around the same time as you, obviously. Maybe younger—born in 2000, but that doesn't matter too much. It's 2014 now." She looked around at the gathering for some reassurance, but she didn't get any. It was quite the opposite, actually.
"Well, it's not surprising," said a man, who, to Kaia's horror, appeared to have a fake eye in place of his old one, gruffly. "A bunch from the past, so what's surprising about a couple from the future?"
