Normal POV~
The atmosphere turned thick after those astounding words. Many were intrigued, some were relieved, and some were confused. Sugoroku, was an inconsistent mixture of all three.
"You came here to apologize?" The King scoffed, "Who do you take me for, a fool?" Atem tilted his head at the remark and frowned a bit.
"No, I don't," He responded.
"Yes, you do. Had you really felt guilty for what you caused, Pharaoh Aknamkanon would've come here and confronted me face to face. Instead, he sends his son to do all the dirty work-"
"With all due respect, King Sugoroku, I ended the war my father declared, and I murdered the man in order to protect Yami. I don't think he'll be coming here any time soon. All I want is to set things right with you, since you did agree with my father on why we were battling in the first place." Atem spoke in a calm voice, not wanting to raise his voice at the moment.
"Wait a minute, you... killed your father to protect my son...?" The King asked with wide eyes, his voice baffled. Not that far away, Yugi was amazed that his friend killed Aknamkanon to keep his brother safe and sound. The man kept his promise...
"I did what I had to do." Upon hearing that, Yami let a small smile break out onto his face. He felt proud and happy for his boyfriend beside him, the warm feelings basking inside him. Gently and swiftly, he linked his hand with Atem's. He hadn't spoken yet, and he probably should, but he trusted that Atem could handle this. If things got nasty, Yami would start speaking. If he wasn't acknowledged, Yugi would.
"...No... This isn't right. You two being with each other is not right!" Sugoroku ran a hand down his face.
"Sugoroku, perhaps we should reconsider-" The Queen was interrupted.
"We can't! And we won't! Why would we accept a man, who will sooner or later turn out to be the same cruel monster his father was, into our family?!" Something snapped inside Yami when he heard his father say those words. It was like whatever ounce of self-control he had in his body left in an instant. The boy sharply looked up and glared at his father.
"How dare you say that?! Atem is not, and will never be, like his father!" He growled out as he let go of Atem to stomp over to his father.
"If you spent a day with him, you would immediately realize he is one of the most caring, nicest, and sweetest men in this world! Your assumptions are meaningless because you're basing him off his father instead of what you're seeing in front of you. I can't tell if you're deliberately refusing to see how he's trying to fix this situation. Mature, he is. You are not." The words spilled from his mouth before he could think about it. Meanwhile, his eyes that bleed with anger and disappointment sustained the glare.
"Yami, are you even listening to yourself right now? What did he do to you to tell me this? He doesn't care about you nor your existence. He just wants you for his own twisted game." Atem was about to speak his mind when his beloved spoke up first.
"That's rich coming from the man who told me he preferred if I wasn't born, isn't it, father?" Yami questioned venomously. Fits of shocked gasps came from the refugees.
"I didn't mean those words, Yami! They all just came out in the heat of the moment!"
"Oh, so you never intended to tell me what you truly think of me!"
"No, Yami, I mean they were never supposed to come out nor were they thought over! I was angry and tired, and I couldn't process anything at the moment. All I thought about was the times you exasperated me by defying me and several others. Damn it, when you went missing, I was so scared, and the worry increased every single day I couldn't find you. You're my son, Yami. I care that you exist, and I'm glad you do." Yami tilted his head at the apology and went silent again. He felt himself becoming comforted and... relieved by what his father told him. But, right now wasn't the time to amend stuff between them. This wasn't what they were meant to be arguing about. He had only brought up the topic to point out his father's hypocrisy. Not for them to change subjects.
