The idea of dark, public areas automatically make me paranoid, since getting kidnapped doesn't exactly sound too fun. Then I think about how hungry I am, and I say screw it.
I suddenly break into a sprint down the jagged stone street, running as fast as I can without stopping until I've turned the corner. I now faintly see the light coming from the windows of our apartment, and I release a giant sigh. Thank gosh I found it.
Immediately as I open the front door, I'm embraced by warmth and the amazing smell of [a favorite meal of yours].
"There you are! Did you get lost?" Your Dad says, visibly relaxing as he sets dinner on the kitchen table.
"Uhh... not too bad. I figured it out."
"Be careful walking at night, honey. You know there's weirdos everywhere. Come on, dinner is ready." Says your mom.
You and your family enjoy the delicious meal as the TV plays in the background, when suddenly you hear something that peaks your interest.
"-was akumatized yesterday and wreaked havoc on some of the most famous landmarks in France, including the Sacré-Cœur and the Louvre. Luckily, Ladybug and Cat Noir were quick to capture the akuma and repair the damage, saving our city once again. On that note, this friday is National Superhero Day. We'll be celebrating by-"
"Do you guys know what they're talking about? Akumatized?" You ask suddenly, interrupting s/n, who was explaining their favorite tv show.
They all turn to glance at the screen.
"Ohhh, yes, sweetie," Your mom says. "Basically, there's good news and bad news about living here - the bad news is, there's a supervillain who releases what are called akuma, which are evil butterflies that can turn someone into a supervillain themselves. His name is... what is it again? Bird Moth?" She looks at your father, who shrugs his shoulders.
"Whatever his name is, he controls people into doing what he wants with these akuma... Hawk Moth! That's his name. But the good news is, we also have two superheroes, who go by the names of Ladybug and Cat Noir. And whenever someone is akumatized, they capture the akuma and repair any damage done. They're always there to save the day," She says reassuringly.
I sit there staring at her, almost waiting for someone to start laughing. No one does.
Wait, are they serious?
"You mean to tell me we live in a city with real superheroes and supervillains?" I say, eyebrows raised to the roof.
"They're so cool! I want to be just like them one day." S/n says excitingly. "Do you think I'd be able to?"
"You just might, if you work hard enough," Your Dad smiles at him/her. "And yes, y/n, we do."

Later, I'm still in shock as I get ready for bed. Supervillains destroying cities? Superheroes saving the day? Am I dreaming?
I stare out the windows of my balcony, where I can see the moon perfectly.
Living here is going to be... interesting. The thought of real superheroes finally sinks in, and I can sense my own self getting excited at the thought. I've always wanted to make an impact on the world myself, so the thought of someone who saves the city from evil being in close proximity is unreal to imagine.
As I finally get tucked in bed and start shutting my eyes, a black shadow zooms across the rooftop opposite my room, or it looks like it, anyway.
I don't have time to realize, though, because I'm already out like a light.
