Sorceress.
That was the only word Uther could think of to describe the figure who now stood before him. Everything about her- her clothes, her boots and ESPECIALLY the staff in her hands- classified her in Uther's eyes as a magical being.
Uther had dealt with strange beasts and those who practised magic many times before now. He knew only too well what the future held for those who dared to corrupt his kingdom.
"Who are you?" The king enquired in a dangerously low voice. If he was afraid at all, then he didn't show it.
The woman regarded Uther with dark eyes that seem to sparkle with deep magic of their own.
"Uther Pendragon..." her voice was deep and warm, as though the visitor even held magic in her words. Yet, Uther found himself trembling and clutching at his throne for protection.
"How do you know my name?"
She paused to consider the matter. "I have heard many things about you, Uther Pendragon, from others who have gone before me."
"Really?" Uther eyed her meaningfully, aiming to intimidate the woman, but she didn't flinch under her gaze.
Panic rose within Uther's chest and his menacing grin was slowly replaced by a fearful look. Whether anger , fear or a combination, it was impossible to tell. Nevertheless, it was obvious that Uther was growing more fearful of this woman with every passing moment.
"You never answered my first question: who are you?"
(Recognise her, anyone?)
"My name is Raven," the woman answered calmly.
Having considered the matter for a moment or so, Uther resumed his composure. "What business do you have in Camelot?"
At this, Raven lifted her head slightly, so as to ensure that she was looking at Uther directly in the eyes.
"I am here to bring you a warning, Uther" she replied. Her voice seemed to have risen in volume when she'd raised her head. "Dark times are to beseech Camelot in the near future and unless you heed my warning, Camelot may not survive in the days to come."
"We have a perfectly strong army of knights," Uther retorted hotly. "Are you suggesting that my forces are not strong enough to combat your magic? Because I know your kind and will NOT allow my kingdom to fall under your power!"
"I do not wish to destroy you or your people, Uther," Raven replied, raising her voice ever more so that her words now rang out against the dry stone walls. "I wish only for peace. The forces that threaten this land are far more powerful than the strength of all your men. I know this because this enemy is like no other you will have a faced before: a sorcerer capable of dark magic, far more powerful than my own. "
"You don't tell me what to do!" Uther growled in a dangerously low voice as he rose from his thrown. "I am the king and no-one orders me around!"
"If you fail to heed my word then Camelot will be destroyed, Uther!" Raven replied. There was no mistaking the warning note that her voice held. "A true leader values the skills of their team-mates, as well as their own skills."
