Merlin: A young warlock, who was born and raised in the village of Ealdor. He now lives in Camelot and is manservant to Prince Arthur Pendragon. Having been born with unique magical abilities, Merlin must be careful to protect himself in a land where practising magic is forbidden. Resourceful, determined and exceptionally loyal to all who know him.
Gaius: Camelot's court physician and Merlin's mentor. Though he appears gruff at first, Gaius has a heart of gold. Conscientious, observant and wise, he takes Merlin under his wing following the young warlock's arrival in Camelot. Gaius is one of the few people who knows about Merlin's magical abilities, as well as one amongst very few who remembers what life was like in Camelot before the Great Purge. Although he's still one of Uther's closest associates, Gaius finds that his loyalties to the king are tested from time to time, especially when he gets caught up in Merlin's adventures! Gaius is often one of the first people to realise when something's amiss.
King Uther Pendragon of Camelot: ascended the throne during a time of war and great peril. He banned all practise of magic from Camelot twenty years ago and continues to execute all those who still practise it, even if no evidence is available to prove their guilt. Ironically, Uther often fails to see magic when it's right in front of him and has fallen victim to several sorcerers before now. Although he cares deeply for his people, especially his son Arthur and his ward Morgana, Uther is vain and cold-hearted. He rarely listens to other people's viewpoints and he looks down on all servants, viewing them as mere objects rather than individuals in their own right. Some would say that Uther is sometimes cruel to be kind- he's a big believer in "the greater good."
