Dawn flopped down into her hammock, her wings hanging over the sides and brushing the floor. She stared up at the ceiling listening to Cherry snore on the ground next to her. The twins had gone home right after they all got back to the tree house. Their parents didn't like them being out past dark. After everything the Nightwings had been through, they deserved to be protective of their dragonets.
Dawn lay awake thinking. She thought about her friends, she thought about her life, but most of all, she thought about her family. How did her father die? Why hadn't her mother come back yet? When would she come back? Or. . . would she even come back at all? Yet even with all these things on her mind, she somehow drifted to sleep.

Dawn woke up and looked out the window. It was almost sunrise. Her favorite time of day. Cherry was still snoring on her bed of ferns and leaves. Quickly and quietly, Dawn rolled out of her hammock, and threw a flower necklace over her head. Cherry made a few every day, but they went bad within a week. Dawn put on her newest one, made of purple lilies. She grabbed a mango from the bowl on the table and flew out.
Dawn flapped to the top of the giant kapok tree that the tree house sat nestled in and landed on the pavilion at the top. They had all helped Midnight make it. He had made her and Cherry's tree house, too, or as they all referred to it as the club house. After all, Midnight wanted to be an architect when he grew up.
The sun was just starting to peek out over the treetops making its daily climb into the sky. Dawnfir sat down to watch it, her scales turning the same beautiful color as the sunrise. Just for that one minute, Dawn forgot about all about her worries, taking the time to savor the moment. Wing beats interrupted her.
"Sorry to interrupt you." Star said softly, landing on the platform. Dawn smiled.
"You know I don't mind, and hey, you're here early. What's the occasion?" She said playfully. Despite the playfulness in her voice, Dawn was right. Star and Midnight rarely came to the tree house before breakfast. It was at least a ten-minute flight from the Nightwing village to the club house, and the dragons in the rain forest were rarely in a hurry.
"Well..." Star started, "I guess I was worried about you. You were acting, um, a little strange yesterday."
"Was I?" Dawn asked, completely unaware.
"When Midnight and I left? You seemed a little distant. What's on your mind?" Star pressed, wanting to help her friend. "I can help, you know."
Dawn heaved a sigh. "It's my mother. I-I want to find her."
Star let out a shaky breath but nodded slowly. "I'll-I'll come with you. You're not doing this alone."
"Me too!" Cherry yelled, appearing next to them. Both Dawn and Star yelped and jumped up.
"Ah! Cherry! This was a private conversation! What are you doing here!?" Dawn demanded of the Rainwing.
"Um, talking to you?" Cherry said unhelpfully. "Preparing to go on a dangerous mission to help a dragon in need?"
"I am not in need of your help! I-" Dawn was cut off by someone clearing their throat behind them.
"You're going to need me on this too." Midnight said. "You're going to need all of us."
"I thought you all might say that." Dawn said to her friends. Her scales were still the same color as the sky. "And you all can come-Thank you."
"Yay! Dawn really thanked me for something! This is a historic occasion!" Cherry danced around the platform, almost falling off, but Star caught her before she fell. "Thanks." Cherry mumbled, then brightened. "When do we leave?"
"Soon." Dawn was determined. "I want to find her as soon as we can."
"I don't think it is going to work out quite the way you planed Dawn." Star reminded her friend.
"Yeah? Why is that?" Dawn was getting impatient. "We need to go right away!"
"Well," Star started patently. "For one thing, I don't think we are going to be able to keep up with you. Do we even know where we are going? None of us have ever left the rain forest! We need to think things through before we do anything reckless."
Dawn sighed. She hated it when her friends made good points. "Fine! What do we do first? I still want to leave as soon as possible."
"First, we should get a map." Midnight spoke up. "Then... we should all practice flying and hunting- minus cherry because she is a vegetarian. Also, we need to figure out how to carry food, and any other stuff we need." He counted the things off on his claws as he spoke. "And-"
"Okay, okay Midnight, we get it, there's a lot that needs to be done." Dawn interrupted. "-But that doesn't change the fact that I want to do this as soon as possible! Three days. I am giving you three days to be ready. Then-then I am leaving without you."
"Dawn! We-" Star was cut off.
"Three days." With that, Dawn dove off the platform.
