""Mn." Lan Zhan replied, before thinking: I hope so too. I really hope so."
Lan Zhan swirled the tea in his cup before gently setting it down. He looked across the inn at Jiang WanYin glaring daggers at him. If looks could kill, Lan Zhan would've been dead already.
Nonchalantly letting his gaze wander across the vast expanses of DaFan Mountain, Lan Zhan let out a tiny sigh. The hand from the Mo Family Village was still bothering him. Question after question wrought upon his mind. What was the hand doing there? Who had released it? Why was it so powerful? Who did it belong too? Where was the rest of its body? Lan Zhan let out another sigh.
After the hand had escaped from the Mo Family Village, they had tracked it to DaFan Mountain, where they met Jiang WanYin- who was organizing a night hunt for his nephew. Lan Zhan frowned slightly, who knows what the hand was capable of doing- especially in the midst of so many juniors.
"Sect leader Jiang! Sect leader Jiang!" a voice called, breaking Lan Zhan out of his trance. "T-the s-statue, it's come to life! Young master Jin is in danger," one of the Jiang Sect's disciples panted, running over.
"WHAT?!" Jiang WanYin screeched shooting up in his seat. "YOU BUFFOONS! YOU CAN EVEN PROTECT A CHILD. TELL THAT LITTLE DIMWIT TO GET HIS ASS BACK HERE!"
"We tried sect leader! He wouldn't listen to us," the disciple protested indignantly.
"THAT BRAT! I'M GOING TO BREAK HIS LEGS!"
"Sect leader Jiang, Jin Ling should be fine calm dow-" Lan Zhan cut in before trailing off. He suddenly heard a sound- the sound of the flute. He had searched for nearly 13 years for this song, this small clue that was unique to him and Wei Ying. And here he was, nearly 13 years later, hearing their song. The song Lan Zhan sang to his love in the Cave of the XuanWu. The song that he never again sang to anyone else.
Lan Zhan shot up like a bullet, drifting like towards the sound like a moth to the flame. His Wei Ying was back. He was sure of it! Joy blossomed inside him and a heartbreaking smile spread across his face.
This time though, Lan Zhan wouldn't let him slip through the gaps of his fingers. This time, he would protect his Wei Ying till the very end. This time, Lan Zhan wouldn't let anyone take away his love.
Lan Zhan practically flew into the clearing where the flute sound stemmed from. There he was. His Wei Ying. But it wasn't the Wei Ying he knew. Wei Ying was a tall and lean young man, who was only a few inches shorter than Lan Zhan. He had this powerful aura around him, but his eyes always held mischief in them. You couldn't tell if he was going to play a prank on you or punch you in the face. He was always easy going and playful, but there was a sense of danger that lurked underneath. Wei Ying wasn't one of the most powerful cultivators in the cultivation world for nothing. And when the two of them stood together, you couldn't tell who was more intimidating.
This Wei Ying was different. He looked... tired. Like life had lost of its pleasure. Lan Zhan balked at the sight. There was no way this man was his Wei Ying. He didn't look anything like him! Wei Ying always had a grin on his face and his eyes were full of life. The man in front of him... was like a statue. Not cold, just... weary. Lan Zhan felt his heart break at the sight. He knew it was partly his fault that Wei Ying became like this.
Lan Zhan dashed forward and grabbed Wei Yings hand as the latter was backing up. He looked into his beloved's eyes and saw a whirlwind of emotion. First there was joy, an indescribable love bloomed in Wei Ying's eyes. Lan Zhan felt his chest puff in pride at the sight.
Then there was pain, it was like Wei Ying was silently asking "Why? Why did you abandon me? I trusted you and you betrayed me" his gaze was full of distrust and wariness. If it was even possible, Lan Zhan felt his heart shatter even more in his chest.
No. He thought. This time will be different. I'll never leave you again, never betray your trust again. This time, you won't be alone.
Lan Zhan's eyes never left Wei Ying's face- even when the disciples around them were screaming "g-g-ghost g-general! It's w-wen ning!" Lan Zhan paid them no heed, all that mattered now was his beloved. His Wei Ying, who was once again in his arms. Lan Zhan felt the knot in his chest finally dissolve. He was home.
"My love," Lan Zhan whispered, baring his soul for Wei Ying to see. He knew that Wei Ying heard him when he saw a tiny furrowing of his brow and Lan Zhen felt his eyes watering at the sight. Lan Zhan was just about to open his mouth again, in case Wei Ying wasn't fully persuaded, but was stopped by a loud bellow.
"WEI WU XIAN," a voice roared. "LOOKS LIKE YOUR BACK."
Lan Zhan turned to see Jiang WanYin's glowering face glaring disdainfully at Wei Ying. A quick flick of his wrist and Zidian shot towards them. Lan Zhan quickly strummed the strings to his guqin, Wangji, in an attempt to stop the purple streaks of lighting from hitting its mark.
"LAN WANG JI, HOW DARE YOU STOP MY ZIDIAN! ARE YOU REALLY SO HELL BENT ON PROTECTING THAT DOG WEI WU XIAN?"
By Lan Zhan's side, Wei Ying flinched slightly, hearing his own brother call him such a degrading name.
"He did nothing wrong," Lan Zhan replied stoically.
"NOTHING WRONG? THAT DOG KILLED MY PARENTS AND SISTER? THAT DOG IS WHAT LEFT A PARENTLESS JIN LING!"
Hearing this, Wei Ying turned around to run, but Jiang WanYin already had his eyes on him and with another flick of his wrist- Zidian hit Wei Ying dead in the center of his back.
