The sound of the box returned like it did every month. The sound made my stomach curl, and the foul taste of Last night's meal made an appearance in my mouth. I never understood this part. The part where they would make us wait and act excited to see another kid who would end up getting scared and start running around like a headless chicken. But how would I know? I only arrived in the maze three months ago.

"Bets on the new shanks name". The  boy with blond hair, the odd accent and a heavy limp asked he nodded his head down in my direction, and I gave him a smirk.

"Gerald the third," I said mimicking his accent the best as possible. Even though I couldn't remember who I was beside the fact my name is Ashley, it had always interested me that most of us had the same accent except Newt maybe he was the sorry shank that found his way into the maze by accident. "Bloody hell I was thinking more like another bloody John or something" Newt snickered giving me a grin.

"You two shush" Albie hissed under his breath as the unmistakable sound of the box coming to a stop could be heard amongst the boys' whispers and just like the times before the sound of the metal doors creaking open began. Another boy. That's the first thought that came into my head. The boy looked in good shape and average height from his crunched position, his face was already dirty probably from screaming and crying while coming up the box. I shivered at the thought of my time in the box. I had kicked the animal that had been in the box with me to death out of fear. That was my first lesson of the maze. Fear brings out something in you that you didn't think you would ever be able to do. But as I snapped myself out of my thoughts i looked back down at the boy who now had a hand across his face as if blocking the sun from his eyes. Shit maybe this kid was gonna be alright I mean I think I might die if I had to rewash someone's pissed stained pants as I did with Chuck. As the new greenie came into better view, all the boys seemed to lean over as if they wanted a better look I turned to Newt raising an eyebrow asking him if he was going to get the greenie Newt's face had turned serious by then as it often did when he was making decisions, honestly serious Newt was one of my favourite Newts the way his eyebrows would furrow as he'd cross his arms in concentration made me want to squeeze his cheeks. I snorted at myself. As if Newt would let me pinch his cheeks. Pulling me out of my train of thought was Gally. That kid was going to be the death of me he was an arrogant bastard who liked to pretend he had more weight around here then he actually did. Not to mention he looked so high strung all the time but that could just be his eyebrow...seriously I had never seen eyebrows like them before they were two perfectly arched lines that nearly touched his forehead.

"Go get him" someone whispers to Gally who immediately does a dramatic leap down that makes the boy flinch.

"Day one greenie, rise and shine," Gally said immediately grabbing the boy by the collar to pull him up Newts face had now turned into a smirk as he watched the boy on the ground I rolled my eyes feeling myself being engulfed by the crowd of people trying to take a look at the greenie and the taunts began as they always did. Though I can't say I got any digs maybe because when I was brought up, I was still covered in animal blood. The greenie began struggling on the floor, and I felt my body tense as I could feel his intention of running

"go greenie" I whispered under my breath smirking the boy pushed past Zart and began running as fast as he could

"Aye! We got a runner" Zart screamed mockingly and the crowd began to laugh. The boy was fast. I'll give him that. He covered more distance then most people but then as if the boy had heard my praises he tumbled forward with a thud, the crowd let out an 'ooft' as if they could feel his pain, but the laughing never stopped I watched the boy stand up and take in his surroundings with fear and confusion in his eyes.

The boy was now locked in a cage. Alby had been the one that decided to go talk to the boy and ask him the basic questions like what his name was and what he was doing here I don't understand why we ask these questions no one has ever remembered anything the first day of being in the glade.
