We are now at Ralph's apartment. It is around Christmas time & Maurice Starr shows up to Ralph's apartment and offers him a deal.

Young Ralph - " What's up Maurice? What you doin' out this way?"

Maurice Starr- " I was hoping we could talk. Your parents around?"

Young Ralph - "Uh yeah, in the other room."

Maurice Starr- " Hey! Y'all"

Patricia Tresvant-" Oh, hi Maurice."

Maurice proceeds to come in and they have a seat at the dinner table.

Maurice Starr- " Your mother's so nice. She reminds me of my mom, Does she make you a cheese sandwich?"

Young Ralph- "Yeah, those are my favorite."

Maurice Starr- " Yeah, mine too. We were so poor, sometimes we couldn't afford the cheese. And cheese was free ——Ralph. you have amazing talent."

Young Ralph- " Thanks."

Maurice Starr- "I've seen a lot of kids sing, but..you are amazing. With some vocal training and some polishing. I can make you a star..*snaps fingers* just like that."

Young Ralph- " What about the rest of the group?"

Maurice Starr- " Don't get me wrong. They're nice kids, but they don't have what you have."

Young Ralph- " What do I have?"

Maurice Starr- " The French call it, je ne sais quoi. ——I know, I couldn't say it for a long time either. But you've got it. Michael has it—Marvin has it. Strong voice, strong stage presence, and good looks. That's a star and once you have that, you don't throw that away.

Young Ralph - "I don't know, I mean um, if it wasn't for the fellas...I wouldn't be singing, performing. They're the ones who brought me in. My boys."

Maurice Starr- " I understand. They're your, ho-ho, hip-zip, hip, doop-doop-doop. they your homeboys right?"

Young Ralph- "Yeah, something like that."

Maurice Starr- " Yeah but, Ralph. You've gotta start thinking about your future. I'm offering you your own record deal. It's a chance for you to change your family's surroundings, and you'd throw all that out the window for some kids you're not even gonna know ten years from now? Just think. Now you don't have to give me an answer right now. Just think about it. Call me."

Young Ralph- " I can't. We ain't got a phone."

The scene then cuts to Ralph and his sister putting up the Christmas tree. Patricia Tresvant walks in and gasps. She tells them that they didn't have to do that but Ralph insisted that whatever money he made from the talent shows they performed at, he put towards getting a Christmas tree. Patricia is filled with tears and walks away after she plants a kiss on her daughters forehead. Ralph is now seen  walking up to a telephone booth and dials Starr Recording Studios to which Maurice answers the phone.
