Brooke Payne V.O.
"Previously on the New Edition Story".
To catch you up, the boys officially form the group as New Edition adding in the last member, Ronnie Devoe. Brooke Payne prepares for their first few shows and on to their first tour, "Candy Girl". Ralph is offered a solo deal but turns it down to be with his boys. After the tour, the boys bring a check home for a $1.87 that will be shared between all 5 members. They are now grown up and have landed a record deal with MCA Records and along with a new manager, Gary Evans.
Los Angeles, CA, 1984
As the scenes fades into a shot of the LA skyline, Ralph is seen sitting alone in the studio and talking to Gary.
Gary Evans-" Ralph, what's going on? Everything alright?
Ralph-" How come I'm always singing everything Gary?"
Gary Evans- " I'm just getting you ready for your solo career."
Ralph-"What?"
Gary Evans-"Nah, I'm kidding. It's a joke but you're the lead singer. You sing most of the parts, it's the way it works."
Ralph- "Yeah, but I'm singing everything. I'm singing leads, backgrounds."
Gary Evans-"Is that too much work for you?"
Ralph-" No, it's not too much work."
Gary Evans-" You sure? You need a vacation already?"
Ralph-" I'm sure. It's just.. we're a group you know. They're not my backup dancers."
Gary pleads with Ralph and gets him to understand that the boys may be jealous of him since it always happens between members in groups. Ralph then asks Gary if they could give them some type of verse in the songs so that way he isn't singing all of the verses. Gary tells him that he can see what he can do for them, the camera then pans out to all the boys recording, "Mr. Telephone Man" starting with Bobby and onto Mike's verse.
Producer- "Hey Mike, I need you to pick it up man. You coming in flat."
Bobby- "Aye Ray, he can't help it. That's just how his voice sounds. He always sounds flat." *Mike pushes him*
