Grim groaned in pain, as his vision came into focus. He looked around, and his body ran cold. He snatched up his scythe quickly, stumbling as he got back up. He looked around; Allison was nowhere in sight. Just as he was about to look for her, the same childish voice piped up from behind him.
"Grim! Where are you?!" Allison cried out.
He floated over quickly, as if he was running, before scooping up the little girl.
"Thank goodness. You scared me." He muttered. Though she did not see it, his hollow, glowing eyes contained fear and concern.
Grim looked in his hand, only to find the music box still there. Carefully setting her down, he handed it to her as he inspected their surroundings.
"Grim, where are we?"
The ground was cold, coated thickly with dead grass that was practically burned to a crisp. The trees around them were all dead, yet on them grew leaves as dark as their bark.
". . Dear child, where we are is not a safe place."
"Where are we?" Allison questioned anxiously, looking around blindly.
"Limbo." He mumbled.
Ally frowned, the little child's lip beginning to tremble. Grim was confused, until her bandages began to become wet with something that was not blood.
Tears.
He sighed, lifting up her bandages carefully as to avoid any wounds. To his surprise, now instead of seeing gouged out eyes he was staring into chocolate brown orbs, large and pure as they filled up with tears. Grim silently hushed her, kneeling down and hugging her tight. He'd play the music box, only to find himself singing softly this time instead of humming. He did not quite sing a song with lyrics, except follow the rhythm of the music box. Grim rocked her softly back and forth in a soothing motion.
It felt like forever before she stopped crying, pulling away. It was only them Grim noticed the injuries inflicted onto her in the accident. [Warning: Graphic content up ahead.]
Her scalp was stitched poorly, continuing to spew blood as if it was still Fresh. Dried blood stained her cheeks, and her hair was messy and matted with the dark red liquid. Her arm was mangled, possibly from the fall, and her waist was now freshly opened; luckily no organs had fallen out.
Grim was revolted by the sight, horrified how such a thing could happen so easily. He'd think to himself, before speaking.
"Now we cannot have you looking like this if you're going through trials. I think we may need to patch you up a bit." He pointed out.
"But. . There's nothing to patch myself up with. How can I do that if there's no medical supplies?"
Grim pondered, tapping a finger to his forehead in thought. Before he then stopped and reached into his robe.
"I think I have a needle and thread in here somewhere. As well as a cloth, maybe. ."
He finally located the needle, pulling it out as well as the thread. However, the cloth was dirty. Grim hollow, glowing eyes narrowed in annoyance.
"Maybe we can find water around here. Every habitat has water!" Allison claimed.
"Well, I guess onto the search for water we go." He mumbled. He tried to take this seriously, but couldn't help but smile at her enthusiasm.
"But," He began, "I'm carrying you. Because you're not yet in the afterlife, your wounds will still remain. After that fall, they're probably fresh. Now, first let's fix up your arm."
He knelt down to her height, grabbing her wrist. Ally twitched, fear filling her brown eyes. Grim glanced at her, gaze softening.
"I will do a countdown. One. . Two. ." On the third number, he pulled swiftly. Allison shrieked, followed by a loud pop as the bone went back into place. She then peeked at her arm.
"It. . Doesn't hurt as bad now." Ally said, before hopping up.
"I hope it doesn't. Now, let's get a move on, Alliso--"
"Ally." She corrected, crossing her arms and wincing as she crossed the broken one.
"Right, right. Now, come on." Grim scooped her up quickly, as he floated into the forest ahead. He must have been right when he said she was underweight; she was light as a feather. Noticing her shivering, he tucked her inside his cloak, letting her peek out so she could see.
Allison was right. After a while of searching, they found a river, glistening in the light with a transparent blue glow. Grim set her down carefully, before running the cloth through the water, making sure to rid it of every ounce of dirt it had.
He grabbed a large, bowl-like leaf, filling it with water as he approached Ally.
"How do you know how to do this. . ?" She asked perplexedly.
"I've mended wounds before. . It's an extremely rare occasion that a soul goes through Limbo, so I've been taught how to in case of emergencies. Though it wasn't much, I continued practicing. That and I sometime observed the word of doctors and nurses in hospitals similar to yours. ." He replied.
"So you watch them while they work? And I thought you were creepy." Allison said. Though he felt slightly offended at first, when noticing her smile and the slight sarcasm in her voice, he knew she was just teasing him.
"Well I mean, it is intriguing." He joked.
Once he set up the thread and needle, he carefully sewed her cuts up. Grim held her still, and made sure not to mess up despite her unexpected jolts and squirming. Once he was done, he wiped off all the blood, and cleaned out her hair.
"I feel better already. Let's go!" Ally commented excitedly. Grim couldn't help but let out a light chuckle as he scooped her back up.
"I hope you don't mind me asking, but. . How exactly did you gain such intense wounds?" He questioned. Right when Allison went unusually silent, he shut himself up.
"Apologies. I should not have ask---"
"Who dares enter these forbidden lands?"
