"So you just want me to wave at people?"

The lady sniffed disapprovingly. She had the largest nostrils Leo had ever seen.

"The Selection is a highly prestigious competition, you must show respect towards the royal family and..." Leo tuned out the rest, looking out of the armored car's bulletproof window. His entire life slipped by him- there was the corner shop, where he bought gum and soda with his weekly allowance. There was creepy Tia Callida's house, kids were always daring each other to touch the fence, ring the doorbell. Leo got all the way to her chimney one time. Leo stuck out his tongue at the high school as he drove by- at least there was one place he was glad to leave.

Then they turned the corner, and Leo choked back a sob. There was his mom's shop. He pressed both hands against the glass, watching his home grow smaller and smaller. It was gone before he was ready to say goodbye.

When he finally turned around, the lady was staring at him. Leo wiped his face furiously with his sleeve. "What?"

She put her hand on his shoulder, her eyes full of sympathy. "You'll be home soon." Leo knew she didn't mean it in a bad way. She was right. The prince would take one look at him, then send him home to his parents.

This would all be over soon.
